As an American, Canada is 10000x more sane than we are right now. I am utterly disgusted and appalled at what America has become.
Vance should stick to fawning over couches and Erika Kirk.
I really wish voters would remember all the silly things politicians say and do at election time. We typically get swept away in the flood of promises and end up voting based on our dislike/hatred for the other party, which is a sign of a very unhealthy democracy.
Can we stop posting US politics here just because they mention Canada? I thought we had “US and Them” posts for this?
I’m not sure who the CPC thinks they are appealing to with all the Canadian right wing twitter accounts retweeting and quoting Vance. This alongside Stephanie Kusie being unhinged doesn’t seem like a great vote support direction.
I listen to loonie hour podcast occasionally, and the one guy would always claim to work at ICeCap Asset Management. For the longest time I thought it was just a tongue-in-cheek joke.
Crazy to see one of their employees retweeted by the Vice-president.
The irony of Vance insisting we don’t blame any “bogeyman” for things, while he’s actively blaming the right-wing bogeyman of immigration for everything, will of course be entirely lost on him and his supporters.
The United States is actively loosening regulations on foreign workers, removing some of the reforms that the Biden Administration did when they received reports of the rampant abuses in the system. The millionaire farmers want access to cheap labor that they can abuse because undocumented agricultural workers aren’t bound to a specific farm. They love cheap, exploitable foreign labor that looks a lot closer to modern day slavery, just like their prisons. They talk about deporting brown people and ruminate about being immigration crises but it is all theatre for their supporters who gobble it up and ignore the fact that farms and farmers aren’t being punished for hiring foreign workers, if anything they have lobbied for even easier access to them and without any safeguards that prevent their abuse.
So when these fascist goons point fingers at Canada kindly tell them where they can shove it.
Hopefully this just brings Canada together even more. There’s going to be traitors sadly, but I honestly believe Canadians will and have come together because of this bullshit

Hot take: He is right that our stagnation is mostly self-inflicted. No one forced us to have internal trade barriers, a TFW program, NIMBY politicians in high positions of power, and supply management. We decided all that on our own.
The same applies to having sky-high immigration outpace housing construction. No one can afford to live in Canada these days. Unemployment is at 7%, but even those with jobs will have roommates for life at this rate. A country where hard work gets you nothing will not lead to productivity, because there is no point.
That being said, his boss and his rhetoric are a big reason why the Liberals were re-elected. You could tell me Carney paid Trump, and I’d believe it, considering how much his rhetoric hurt the Conservative Party. And his saying this will only continue to distract us and make the types he is referring to reflexively shout how great Canada currently is, which is completely unacceptable given how many real problems Canada has to fix right now.
Edit: On the multiculturalism point, there are good-faith criticisms of the Canadian model that are not rooted in xenophobia, such as importing ethnic conflicts (since assimilation is actively discouraged). However, Vance is not the best messenger for this, and America is further from being a peaceful society than Canada by a mile and a half. But again, this does *not* mean that we should pretend that Canada is a utopia with no self-inflicted problems at all.

This isn’t really about Canada at all. Vance is between a rock and a hard place with Maga’s relationship to Nick Fuentes and the Groypers. If he wants to be the heir of the Republican party, he has to find some footing with the racist contingent of the base. A shot at Canada’s immigration policy is a way for him to do it without challenging the members of his party that are embracing Fuentes who he may want in his coalition later.
Don’t worry last boy is putting out a new catalogue with nothing but pictures of couches. He will be busy with that for awhile so we won’t hear much from him.

Pretty sure that this is Vance testing the waters on the entire annexation thing and trying to drum up support within Canada by dropping truth bombs about the stagnant economy. What CBC-watching Boomers who occasionally go on Reddit think about this is much less important than what military aged young men think about this.
When Poilievre and Trump are both gone, Vance and Jivani are going to make their moves for leadership. Conservatives here will start listening to Vance with messaging like this because it plays beautifully into their emotions, and Jivani will be propped up by it.

That’s rich coming from a guy who is VP of a country that has:

* **Child Poverty Rates**: The U.S. has the highest rate of child poverty among the countries in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), with a rate of 20.9%.
* **Healthcare Affordability and Access**: Despite spending the most per person on healthcare globally, the U.S. health insurance system makes treatment financially difficult for many, and medical debt is a leading cause of personal bankruptcy.

Fuck JD Vance. But also he is not wrong. Reports from the Bank of Canada and multiple top economists show that large scale temporary immigration streams have had huge impacts on the working class and are the main cause of high unemployment and higher housing costs. But also, fuck JD Vance.
Vance’s best bet is to stay quiet. There’s so much anger at the US right now that their outward interference and statements that it’ll have the opposite impact. It’ll result in a boost of support for the liberals if they keep that up.
JD Vance was correct when he said that Canada’s GDP/capita has been stagnant for 10 years.

This spiel and the CPC spiel on it is based off GDP per capital numbers which are averages. Most developed countries stall out and swings on this metric are often external for them. For us it varies based on oil and resources demand worldwide.
The US is one country where it increased somewhat steadily. But these are averages of GDP versus pop. It doesn’t reflect how people are actually doing. In the US the gains in productivity or production and the demand for that production goes only to the top.
For the average American they’ve been sliding downwards. ’stagnating‘ is a better situation than decline. Especially tarrifs under cutting their buying power making all Americans poorer in absolute and relative terms.
For Canada new comers earn less and have less. So more new comers lowers the average but the median Canadian is no further ahead or behind. It’s the way averages can deceive. Our inequality is not as severe so gains to gdp are more spread out.
