      Oh look, another attack vector that will definitely grow more popular.

      The tech illiterate has had rough time of late.

      First, they had to navigate the minefield of sketchy VPNs due to restrictive content laws, now they’ll have to do the same with third-party codecs because OEMs are too cheap to pay the licensing fees.

      Wouldn’t they have already paid for licensing for all of the chips they ordered?

      I could see them excluding it from future chips.

      This sounds dumb.

      I paid for HVEC on Windows years ago. It was a one-time cost of $1 and it covers all instances of Windows that I use. It kind of sucks, but I guess I don’t think it’s that big of a deal? Am I missing something?

      This article is confusing at best. At one point it says they disabled hardware functionality. At another they say they just aren’t including the codec. 

      So which is it? Are they bricking the functionality for the chips with bios, or does this only impact people that don’t wipe computers when they get them?

      There’s a big difference between it runs like ass forever to save the OEM $.04 and “oh I can just use VLC”.

      So, how do they disable it? I am guessing a BIOS update. 
      How will the push it? I am guessing windows update.
      Article does not mention any of it.

      Open source encode/decode, is that what AV1 is? Or, is it just some other thing that will get monetized later?

      is this nearly identical what synology did with their DSM update and 2025 lineup? maybe this will push AV1 to move faster
