    1. Tokyo District Court on Wednesday ordered U.S. information technology company Cloudflare Inc. to pay about 500 million yen in damages for assisting copyrights violations by pirated manga websites.

    2. More specifically Cloudflare provided servers anonymity without checking their owners real ID and refused providing information about owner on copyright infringement notification.

      Good! I think infrastructure companies should verify site owners the same way banks verify customers. They’re part of the ecosystem, whether they admit it or not.

      Piracy is insanely huge here though, and it’s funny how it never gets talked about. Most of it isn’t even fancy, just screenshot-sharing sites and Google Drive folders passed around like it’s nothing. Just last month I read that there are 900+ pirate sites totaling like 2 billion visits from 123 countries/regions, and a large part of that traffic is tied to Japan.
