So there are two ways of looking at this. A failed prison system in terms of reform or a failed system based off not failing long enough. I tend to think the former because you go to jail or prison and become a better criminal. There are very few programs to teach prisoners actual skills to turn their life around. The story op linked is very sad in many ways.

People keep saying Louisiana and Mississippi have high incarceration rates “because they’re Republican states,” but then something horrific happens in Chicago and suddenly everyone agrees certain people should be in jail. So which is it. Do we want stricter consequences or not?
The man with 70+ prior offenses absolutely should’ve been behind bars. In states with tougher sentencing, like Louisiana, he probably would have been. But this shouldn’t be a left-right argument at all.
What we’re seeing across the country—North Carolina, Chicago, random attacks on trains and buses—isn’t about political labels. It’s a public safety and mental-health crisis. We can’t keep pretending it’s one party’s fault when systems everywhere are failing in different ways.
