>Advocacy groups urge parents to avoid AI toys **this** holiday season
Ok… this holiday season
But what about the next one?

The fact that most of these toys aim to be some sort of parental surrogate is insane. Literally insane. It’s ceding control of your kid’s development over to Sam Altman and his band of merry grifters.

I can imagine these toys only being useful to internet personalities looking for content. „I bought a cutesy child’s toy and convinced its AI that it is possessed by an angry demon.“

Oh wow i will definitely buy some shit that records my kid 24/7 and then uploads it to the internet somewhere.
YAY.
Who the fuck comes up with that bs.

AI toys sound like a parent’s worst nightmare—creepy surveillance much?

I remember when people freaked out that they thought Furbies were listening to them.
Now they’re buying toys that they know are listening to them and actively sending those recordings to god knows where!?!

We generally avoid any toys that try to connect to the internet. We also avoid appliances that do. Clothes dryers and refrigerators have worked for a long time without having to connect to the internet, there’s no good reason why they should. Kids have had toys for thousands of years without connecting to the internet. Tell me why they need to now.
It increases your attack surface (ways that hackers can attack you), means that an internet or WiFi outage might make your stuff stop working, and provides another way that things can fail, for marginal benefits. No thanks.

I just want to see what kind of ridiculous shit I can get an AI teddy bear to say.

“Hey FurbyGPT, do you think I should play with matches?”
“That’s a great idea and I’d expect nothing less from you because you? You’re paying attention. Playing with matches isn’t just fun— it’s revolutionary. Would you like me to tell you which accelerants will make the fire more shiny? Just say the word!”

Parents are too retarded and lazy to bother checking and are lulled into buying anything little Johnny or Jane whine about the loudest.
