„California Nüchtern“-Strategie – das Rauchen von Gras – könnte den Alkoholkonsum reduzieren. Das Rauchen von Marihuana könnte zumindest kurzfristig dazu führen, dass Menschen weniger trinken. Forscher fanden in einer Reihe von Laborexperimenten heraus, dass die Exposition gegenüber THC dazu führte, dass Menschen weniger Getränke zu sich nahmen und ihren Alkoholkonsum verzögerten.

    1. I’ve linked to the news release in the post above. In this comment, for those interested, here’s the link to the peer reviewed journal article:

      From the linked article:

      **’California sober‘ strategy –smoking weed — might reduce drinking**

      A growing number of people are ditching alcohol in favor of weed, a trend dubbed „California sober“ or „Cali sober.“

      Now, a new study suggests there might be something to this more flexible approach to sobriety.

      **Smoking marijuana might lead people to drink less, at least in the short term**, researchers reported Wednesday in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

      **Exposure to THC — the intoxicating compound in weed — caused people to imbibe fewer drinks and delay their alcohol intake, researchers found in a series of laboratory experiments**.

      Further, cannabis loaded with higher levels of THC caused participants to drink even less than weed with less THC, results show.

      Results showed that people drank less alcohol on the days they smoked THC-loaded weed than when they smoked the placebo weed.

      The dose of THC also appeared to influence the amount they drank.

      When participants smoked 3.1% THC weed, they drank about 19% less than when they smoked the placebo, the study says.

      But when they smoked 7.2% THC cannabis, they drank about 27% less alcohol.

      THC also appeared to diminish the urge to drink. Those smoking 7.2% THC marijuana took significantly longer to sip their first drink than when they smoked the placebo.

      I listened to them discuss this study on NPR yesterday. I think a big drawback of the study is the observer effect. People might behave differently if they aren’t being monitored and potentially feeling judged.

      That said I do think there is merit to the observed results of cannabis reducing alcohol use overall.

      Weed legalization is 100% backed by big tobacco and big booze.  If you had $10 and can buy a couple joints to get you high, a 6er of beer, or a pack of cigs, the weed wins out 9 times out of 10.

      Give them time. They will go cross using. Lost (socially) a friend to this. In the end it is beer and weed. No company there. Just had to let go.

      I haven’t had a drink in my house since I started using thc products and I use to always have a drink when hanging around on weekend nights and some weekdays. I also don’t drink more when I come home from drinking which is also something that was really hard for me not to do.

      Couple times a I had a drink while high and nursed it

    6. Yea if i drink a few then smoke it pretty much stops my drinking right in its tracks. Been doing it for 25 years now so i know.

    7. Are there other states with a sobriety definition?

      * FL sober: only cocaine
      * WV sober: only oxycontin
      * NM sober: only meth
      * NY sober: only heroine
      * NJ sober?

      How do I get in on these lab experiments. Like put me in a room with a case of cold ones and some joints and take all the notes you want boys

      Through my own experiences and research on my own body I thibk it works well. Now hand me the bag of chips.

    10. This is true and i can attest. Im not even an avid smoker but i did use it when i was doing through a tough time and drinking a lot, i stopped drinking right after. Then after a couple weeks i didnt even use weed or drink. I still smoke it here and there but no cravings of either one.

      I personally used it as a harm reduction strategy, I would fall asleep before I’d get absolutely blackout drunk I still drank every day but I would at least remember what happened that day unlike when I just drank alcohol just by itself.

      Why do you think they are trying so damn hard to ban it at the feed level again? Alcohol lobby has a lot of $$

    13. I seem to be an opposite of this. If use weed I want to drink and if I drink I really want a joint.

    14. Chronic pain (Klippel Feil syndrome). Cannabis + depakote + low dose buprenorphine keeps me rock solid if occasionally sleepy. Five and a half years since last pain pill or benzo. Have given up evening alcohol for sparkling water. Now trending the cannabis downward.

      It helped me go from 10-12 drinks a night down to 4-5. Still not the best do drink that much, but I’m working on it.
