Am I understanding correctly that this would apply to people who have one of their eight great-grandparents who were status Indians?
On one hand, this is definitely something that is more fair to the children.
On the other hand, what are the long term implications? The math is that eventually most people would be „status Indian“ in Canada. That’s not inherently a bad thing in terms of genetics. But it does pose a question on what that means for the viability of the indigenous specific programs and membership in bands.
What does it mean for Metis membership, which is also in the constitution. Does this mean you can be Metis and Indian Status? Get benefits from both the Metis Federation and ISC?
I’m not entirely sure we’re prepared to have a hard conversation about what it means now before it becomes an issue later.
