So this rule came out after the books were printed? Seems lame

But more importantly isn’t this an award for writing, not for cover art?

Popular and well-connected creative writing graduates should also be disqualified. So many lousy writers coasting on nepotism in Australia and New Zealand imo.

I took one creative writing course as an elective at university and noped out when I realised that my tutor was not a good writer themselves.

    3. That cover art is actually terrible. I’d rather have a stock photo of a train at that point.

    4. >Wilson said it was also upsetting for the production and design team, who had worked hard on the books.

      >Smither said the designers spent hours working on the cover of her book, which features a steam train and an angel “half-obscured in the smoke”, inspired by artist Marc Chagall’s figures.

Working for „hours“ sounds about right. A cover should take days, at a minimum. That left cover is egregious and I could have made it myself in a couple of hours with zero design expertise and zero tools other than ChatGPT. It makes the book itself look cheap and low-effort.

While I think this is unfair to these specific authors, it’s good for all authors long-term as it puts pressure on publishers to hold their designs to a higher standard. These covers are rough.

    5. So now we’re judging books by their covers are we?

Just adding another log to the theory that I have been living in bizarro world since 2015.

“it was also upsetting for the production and design team, who had worked hard on the books.”

Poor dears. Almost a whole afternoon down the drain.

This is simply blatent stupidity and pettiness

Its a book cover. Who cares if its AI or CGI or drawn by a 5yo.

Its crazy that those who are supposed to be judging a book by its contents, have reduced themselves to simply judging a book by its cover.

      Absolutely ridiculous.

    8. This decision is almost as dumb as the decision to approve either of those covers based on how they make human eyes bleed to look at them AI or not…

Does the author have any say in the design of the book cover? I thought that was all on the book publisher.
