I’ll wait until the actual budget. All these “according to reports this” “according to reports that” stories are mind numbingly obtuse. I get they will feed the media certain policies to test the waters. But the run up to this budget has been ridiculous.
Edit: Not sure why I’m being told the Government will leak policies as an explanation, as if I didn’t make it clear I’m already aware of that.
I’m am sure plenty of stuff we’ve heard are probably legitimate ideas floating about. But the sheer volume of „leaks“ feels like complete bullshit.

Fully convinced that papers are just making shit up to generate clicks now.
I hope some news outlet collates all these „According to sources“ speculation articles after the budget comes out and rates how many of them actually turned out to be true.

Triple lock ??? Nah, let’s hit the milkshakes……. we will be cap in hand to the IMF before we touch the triple lock, despite our knowledge of how unaffordable it its.
Im in my late 30s now and im terrified of whats waiting for my generation in retirement…. or should I say a lack of whats waiting for us!
It doesnt matter who gets in power, they all make the same mistakes and continue to kick the can down the road.
What’s happening today will be locked back on in sheer amazement, the fact that we willfully destroyed our future generations security to keep a single group of people happy.

This isn’t a new tax, it’s ending an exemption that’s clearly not fit for purpose. Why should a highly sugary milk-based drink not be taxed while a non-milk based drink with the same sugar content is?

The original tax is also idiotic, it encourages suppliers to add more harmful ultra processed ingredients to their beverages to avoid the tax.

Pasty tax redux. Cue endless discussions on „is it a milkshake if made with oat milk? Is supermarket chocolate milk a milkshake? Will it be taxed if it’s sold from a kiosk or an outdoor stall?“. And some wonk will run numbers and work out that it will cost £1bn more to implement than it raises.
They are so so bad at this. Just raise income tax on higher earners. There’s 7.4m higher rate tax payers in the UK, including 2 in our house. An extra £10 a week tax would raise £3.8 billion.

It’s just to bring them in-line with other drinks. A lot of milkshakes are essentially desserts disguised as a drink.
They should also apply sugar tax to coffee and alcohol.

Reports?
Reports of what exactly? Data that is not available?
U-turn on something that was never announced by anyone but media tabloids?
Give me a break, I am getting sick of this type of article.
This is not news, this is speculation that hides behind a word „report“. This entire article is based on the word „report“ that is not shared in any capacity.

Whats the historical record for most amount of seats lost in a single election cycle? I think Labour has 405 seats currently, I’m going to predict they have around 100 after the next election. I can’t think of any other government that is just so bad at doing anything.
They are doing a very good job of making the Tory shitshow of the previous 9 years (lets give the Tories some credit and say they were semi-competent before 2015) look good.
Aside from Truss/Kwartang (which basically doesn’t count) I think Starmer & Reeves are the worst PM/Chancellor pair in UK history.

Tax the bloody rich and stop pissing about! Why are politicians so scared to hand out a wealth tax? (Ok, I know why, but I’m wondering if anyone will try and over explain why we shouldn’t do it)
