    1. >Texas already ranks 47^(th) in the nation in public school funding and pays teachers $10,000 less a year than the national average. No surprise then that Texas students trail the nation in reading and math scores, according to [the Nation’s Report Card](https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/subject/publications/stt2024/pdf/2024220TX8.pdf), a nonprofit that analyzes testing data.

      >The Texas Public Policy Foundation, a right-wing think tank funded by conservative billionaires, loved the idea.

      >Tying the hands of school boards will guarantee they will have to close more schools and cut more teachers, explained Clay Robison, spokesman for the [Texas State Teachers Association](https://tsta.org/).

      >“Abbott does not really care about public education; his focus now is on private schools, charter schools, and giving them all the tax dollars,“ he told me. „More teachers are going to quit.“

Idiocracy is upon us. The Christian nationalists wanted to end public school, and now, we’re going to be led by Brawndo.

Well of course. The ultimate goal is to do away with public schools entirely so only the wealthy can get a quality education.

    3. It’s the oldest play in the book: defund public services, point out how they’re struggling, then use that as an excuse to send public money to private hands. A perfect, vicious cycle that hurts the vast majority of students.

I’m an awful Christian. Every couple days I have ask for forgiveness for my wrathful thoughts about a nice cleansing asteroid.

    5. Of course, gut public schools. That lets the christian nationalists take over to teach only men can be the master, and women, and girls, are better suited for slave labor and forced marriages at 15. Just more of the pedo elite Repugs taking control.

If Abbott gets reelected, I say that the rest of the states encourages Texas to secede from the U.S.

Typical republican state government. The rush to the bottom of all societal metrics that benefit children and families.

So glad I left that corrupt shit hole of a state.

To the people of Texas – you have a king, not a government. *And he has no term limits*

Who needs competent teachers and quality public education, when politics can underfund education long enough to make public education disappear, and to raise a new breed of blissfully ignorant Christian fascists?

    10. PartyClient3447 on

Does anyone know if he is a product of public school education? If so, it definitely failed him.

    11. The South going out of its way to make the US a Serfdom. Idiocracy wasn’t pessimistic enough.

    12. luv2ctheworld on

Man, it’s sad the generational impact this is going to have on the US population.

The kids who could have become future scientist, doctors, engineers, will now be given education that is focused more on religious basis.

It was always the plan they love the poorly educated! They tend to vote against what is better for them! keep the poor uneducated wage slaves poor and desperate.

      This is so f*cked.
I really can’t stand this man

& watch people still say, “but, but, my property taxes isn’t so high now. It’s a win 😒”

    15. Right wing politicians destroy education then are Pikachu faced as to why Americans are stupid and unskilled laborers that Don’t know anything

    16. The complete lack of public schools in the south in the early 19th century is a huge reason the Civil War occurred.

    17. ScoobertDrewbert on

Schools with extremely high tuition that do not pay their teachers worth shit are getting millions in subsidies…for what exactly? Who in their right mind thinks this is okay? Do they really think that money is going to towards the kids’ education or paying teachers any more? Private schools take in so much money as it is just to fill their director’s pockets.

    18. As a Texan, I am so sick of this shit. I have 2 kids in public school and it’s terrifying that they will not have the skills and knowledge needed to advance in life. I am seriously looking to gain employment outside of Texas…and if successful, I will have the difficult job of telling my kids it’s time to move. I hate what this would mean to them and the bonds they’ve made but I have to think about their academic future.

These crazy people in Texas have a kink for being uneducated and woefully ignorant. Coupled with the crazy weather and high taxes and insurance rates….naw fuck that.

Decades-long attacks on our public education have been devastating to national politics. By design.

    20. RandyArgonianButler on

This is what Republicans did to Arizona. All the districts are strapped for cash. They have to pile 30 kids in a classroom, because there’s not enough teachers to go around.

    21. Particular_Ticket_20 on

These conservative republicans hate the working class and hate America.

They want to destroy everything. They pay lip service to American values and tradition.

For generations we valued Americans‘ access to decent, free education. It was a hallmark of american greatness. It was an equalizer that lifted millions of people and a cornerstone of what made this country strong and productive. People around the world envied it and wanted it for their children.

Now our leadership derides and insults it. Dishonestly accuses it of being dangerous and subversive for their own greed and ideology.

Its pathetic and sad. We should be having honest discussions about making it a strong positive force and funding it to achieve that for anyone in our society who wants it. Instead we’re starving it and letting these grifters line their pockets while they build private little education systems for themselves.

    22. Verum_Orbis on

This is intentional and what Project 2025 Christian Nationalists want. They’re doing it in Florida as well. They want schools to be Christian indoctrination centers.

    23. Mysterious-Wasabi103 on

It’s crazy how many working class people who send their kids to public schools vote for politicians to send their tax dollars to private schools they could never afford.

    24. BusterStarfish on

This is quietly one of the most vile and corrupt things the right is doing around the country. Child education for profit is despicable and we all suffer for it.

    25. drethnudrib on

White Texans will be happy as long as Black and Hispanic kids aren’t able to compete with their kids and their state legislature is too gerrymandered to do anything about it.
