And this is legal ownership. There are also more people who own guns illegally.

What is this map showing?
At first I guessed it was showing the proportion of adults in each state who own one or more guns.
Then I saw the text about there being more guns than people in the country, so now I have no idea what the metric is. Is it total guns per state divided by total population?

These high rates of gun ownership must make the US a really safe place to live, right? The whole good-guy-with-a-gun theory, after all.
So tell me, just how low is the rate of violence in this law-abiding utopia where every citizen has the power to enforce the law with their own trusty weapon? /s

The more rural a state the higher the gun ownership.

I’m in awe about Texas, Oregon is higher . . .Oregon.

Probably worth saying this is almost certainly the percentage of households that have at least one gun, and not the percentage of individuals who own a gun. I think it makes the numbers look a bit higher since dad having a hunting rifle could means dad, mom, and 3 kids are all „gun owners“

Half of the guns in the entire WORLD are in the USA.

I can’t post an image here but go put the gun ownership map against [Suicide by State map](https://share.google/syVhzUNJkoSsZOVmH). Now I’m not saying the two are definitely connected but…well…

Of course in Alaska you might actually need the gun when you’re on an evening stroll.

Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming gun ownership makes sense. There’s a lot of big game wildlife out there. A lot of legal hunting. So a lot of wilderness and wildlife.
I don’t get the LAMSAL states. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama. What wildlife are they so afraid of?

Seeing WA gun ownership line up with Texas is kinda funny
