    1. I know this is probably outdated, but I find it hilarious that they don’t recognize Crimea as Russian

It’s interesting how China and Korea get their place names so much shorter than other parts of the world.

I wonder how authorities allowed maps like this because they show a fractured USSR. If North koreans know communism to be fragile, might be bad for the regime.

    4. Are those Red Lines roads? If so odd choice showing the A30 for UK London to Exeter?

At the time, both Koreas considered themselves to be the legitimate government of the Korean peninsula.

A lot of the international borders are like someone didn’t care about the detail and just drew in blobs about where a country is.

Outdated, incorrect borders of Russia are shown on the map. Would be interesting to see a newer version

    8. The red lines roads are hilariously bad. For example the depicted one from Sofia to Bucharest doesn’t even exist, it is still in construction even in 2025. The one from Sofia to Istanbul, on the other hand, is not depicted.

Belarus retook Smalensk, Estonia retook Petseri and Latvia Abrene, lol.

    10. Wtf going on with Texas roads, or Texas for that matter. No mention of any cities. I guess that’s supposed to be I10 and it just hits Louisiana and ignores Houston lol

I can’t help but notice that the US and Japan are the only countries in gray on the world map.

    12. Hmm.

They transliterate Germany as „Doitschilland“ while South Korea calls us 독일.

    13. As already mentioned by a few people, probably the most interesting part of this atlas is that it consistently shows in grey the United States and Japan (and only those two countries). This is to comply with the narrative that considers the US and Japan the two natural enemies of North Korea, beyond any other political conflict they may have.

The atlas contains individual maps for each country. All of these maps show the countries in pink, except for the US and Japan, which are still shown in gray (as it can be seen [in the source article](https://www.cartographerstale.com/p/an-official-atlas-of-north-korea)).

Interesting that the North Korean name for Canada (카나다) seems to be derived from French, while South Korea seems to draw on English (캐나다)

Here’s my hot take: I see „KM“ in the legend. Even North Korea uses the metric system!! America not so much. North Korea: yes.

    16. Kinda love that the old Texas town is El Paso.

Also love how you can tell Albuquerque not only from its position, but that the last two characters used in the name appear to be the same, lol

    17. This map is outdated.

Since North Korea dropped the reunification narrative with the South, a newer version of the map would show South Korea as a separated country of its own with the name „Republic of Korea“ (대한민국).

They either misplaced Ottawa or they think Montreal is the capital of Canada.

Wow, interesting difference between South Korean and North Korean country names is that, for some names at least, North Korean will use country’s native name, while South Korean will use English name (or their own).
