Not to lay into international Chinese students. Most are probably great, But my god it’s hard not to just assume they are stealing information.

My experience with it is from the film industry, last week. I am not alone among my peers. Other stories have mirrored my experience to a T.

Right now we are SLOW so people are desperate including myself. So what has popped up in the last year are these things called “verticals” super cheap to produce, low quality, all Chinese. But with MASSIVE goals.

I am ALWAYS going to have a talk with productions that ask for help, because my job is safety, especially STUDENT films(Train them to respect the safety of their performers), and I usually put that before getting paid (probably too much) so last week when I got a call asking my day rate, I told them and set up a meeting about stunt coordinating “two car crashes, 4 fights, a child falling out of a window, and 18 borderline abusive slaps”. I didn’t know it was a vertical, I just had a script.

I spent an hour going over things with them because I assumed (ass was me) that they had accepted my union day rate. Explaining BASIC SAFTEY, so that people wouldn’t die.

Explaining BASIC rigging, basic tricks to make it safer and cost less, basic film standards for not getting people hurt.

They told me they rented a car off of Turo for the STUNTS, (that was a 20 min conversation about how fucking illegal it is to destroy unaware civilian’s personal vehicles)

An hour of “you can’t do that you’ll hurt someone” “you can’t do that it’s a felony”

We spent more than an hour working 20 pages out of 120, before

Got the response.

“Awesome, with the information you gave us we don’t need to hire you for the first few days, let’s move on to the next scene.”

“Well obviously you need me there you don’t know what you are doing”

“No I have the notes”

“You have notes and zero experience, that’s why i charge what I charge, you need me there. Maybe now we should clarify my day rate”

“NO. You will tell us about the next scene”

“No, you will confirm my day rate and then we can absolutely continue”

“you’re day rate will be $XXX”
(1/5 of my actual rate, I could work at Starbucks and make similar for 12 hours)

Needless to say after more than an hour of “please don’t put people’s life at risk” being met with “we don’t need you now at that insulting rate anyway” was deeply offensive.

Then, and I’m not joking the producer said.

“We could just have our friend do it we dont need you”

I hung up.

(They’re going get someone hurt, I’m not going to be a part of that)

They don’t know what they are doing, and they are very polite at asking. But the second they get the information they want out of you (the actual professional) they’ll fire you, pass the information on to someone in their community and you’re fucked out of a week of work.

Sorry, this is just ridiculous.

Japan does not engage in the shit that Russia and China do where they’ll make random foreign citizens hostages due to a diplomatic row.
