The problem with a ten year path to permanent settlement is that it makes legal immigration far too difficult and you’ll fail to attract the professionals you need. It’s far too long and people will choose alternatives like Canada.
I don’t know why countries feel the need to kill legal immigration alongside illegal immigration. Those issues aren’t that connected and you’re shooting yourself in the foot by making legal immigration untenable. Nobody likes living on a visa that can be revoked anytime for 10 years.

I hope Labour implements a common sense policy that prevents Reform from coming into power.

I’ve seen a lot of foreign professionals in my industry debating leaving the UK due to this change.
I suppose that’s the intention behind the ruling, kicking our foreign people, but the economic downturn this will cause makes me wonder if it’s worth it especially with the current state of things.

Labour seem determined to cosplay the Tories/Reform. It won’t improve their popularity. I predict they’ll be destroyed in the 2029 election.

Unfortunately this won’t appease the Reform voters because they can’t read

Every year about 800000 people retire in the UK, and about 500000 people die.
About half our government spending budget is taken up paying pensions to old people and providing healthcare to old people.
Since the number of pensioners rises by about 300000 every year, the cost is rising continuously.
If you re going to fund looking after the old with taxes then you need to allow enough immigrants to pay all those extra taxes.

The thing is we fully accept immigrants and want them to come here for a better a life, but where do you get ever see a family coming… it’s always a dingy from France full of 20-30 year old males

Is this not an attempt to get Trump to take it easy on the bbc?

ridiculous waste of time and MY taxes! how much is this extra admin going cost and enforce. Just sort out the damage the Tories did to the system and get them all processed. Not allowing them to work whilst being processed? F’ing ludicrous! This is due to Brexit, so should easily sorted for a proper Labour government…

The government should focus on deporting criminal immigrants. If you come to seek a better life or asylum, you are expected to be an exemplary citizen. There should be zero tolerance for crime.

I know a guy from Afghanistan who came as an asylum seeker. He will proudly go around telling everybody how much safer Afghanistan is now the Taliban are in charge, and how everybody now respects good moral standards as described by Islam.
I kinda wonder if he thinks it’s so safe then why doesn’t he go back? Except he obviously won’t because he has a good life here and permanent asylum.

Honestly, this is a very mid in policy.
