SS: In the first EU-hosted civil society conference on Syrian soil since Assad’s December 2024 ouster, hundreds of activists, minority representatives, and transitional officials gathered in Damascus for „The Day of Dialogue“ to confront sectarian tensions, transitional justice, and the fate of 130,000+ missing persons. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani hailed it as a „solid partnership“ shifting talks from Brussels „about Syria“ to inside Syria, while EU reps pushed for an „inclusive state for all citizens.“ Amid lingering coastal violence and Druze unrest, does this direct engagement signal Brussels‘ tentative normalization with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led authorities and a pathway to sanctions relief/reconstruction aid, or remain limited to civil society optics in a fractured post-Assad landscape wary of Islamist governance?
