I think the answer would be all services get cut from the federal government immediately and all assets owned by the federal government must be paid for. The finances of separating from Canada will never make sense if properly born by the separating province.
No not again……please. I was just considering investing in Quebec and living there again…..well if you’re going to tank it all again maybe the business will work in Nova Scotia or Ontario, but the shield in Quebec was the preferred. So if you are planning on tipping the whole cart over again c’est la vie.
It would be interesting to see how a process will play out. Let’s say an independent Quebec is responsible for paying 20% of Canada’s federal debt, will Canada’s lenders agree to swap out 1/5th of their bonds to Quebec CAD bonds? Or will Quebec issue CAD bonds and give them to Canada – but if it does that how do you decide what the coupon rate for the bond is if Quebec is issuing those bonds without an auction? All of these will become even more complicated if Quebec has a different currency.
We went through this kind of discussion in 1995. Back then they even paid some consultants (or friends of the regime) to prepare ascension to country status.
All in all, just ignore all these messages. The PQ is delusional and publish these for its hard core base of elderly boomers.
With the current political environment, I don’t see a winning path for any separation movement. I am actually more afraid of the loonies in Alberta. Quebecers are more pragmatica
Imagine taking a realistic view of today’s world …. And thinking the best course of action is to go at it on your own.
Quebec would have to give up some of their territory. This came up many times last time they wanted to leave.
Negotiations with first nations who want to stay in Canada is a thorn in Quebec’s side. As Quebec would have to cede that land to them and Canada.
Quebec would become a much smaller nation. They don’t like to talk about this when rallying their supporters.

Idiocy doesn’t deserve respect. People making plans about made up futures which will not happen rather than building a platform to deal with the actual problems facing quebec deserve nothing but contempt.
Show me you can govern properly as is, then you can ask me to respect your hypothetical. Respect is earned. What have they done to earn it?
It would also be broke with zero support from Canada, and lose most of its industries as Canada would tax anything. Quebec heavily subsidized can’t even offer decent health care. The emerge outside Montreal , doesn’t even have O2 monitors or blood pressure automatic cuffs that work , nor the heart rate monitors… 3rd world health care.
Quebec better get their ass in gear and split. Before we invest more money in Bombardier with the SAAB Gripen. If that comes to be.
Then Canada can drop the French language as well. Not sure how they think they will be able to survive on their own.

Here’s the thing: if the citizens there vote to separate and want to give it a go, I say Canada should take the high road and negotiate a fair exit for them.
In this day and age of conflict and oppression, perhaps Canada can set an example of how to address self determination.
My sense is that if we resist, it will just give the separation argument more fuel in Quebec.
They will need us; we will need them; it’s already a situation where they’re largely able to be self governing with the notwithstanding clause and constitutional protections.
The risk for Quebec is that their costs will go up, their foreign investments may drop, and their government more oppressive than it already is to non-white citizens.
Personally I don’t see an upside except in their concept of who they are. I don’t think there’s much that they aren’t able to do economically or culturally today.
But if the rest of us want a Canada that respects self determination, let’s make an argument to stay but facilitate their decision.
I tell my separatist friends get Quebec to be better than the rest of Canada and I’ll vote to separate. Right now, we can’t even pave our roads right.
Wish we could make vote for the BQ from other provinces. Would love to support them in their dream for separation.
