This sort of thing does annoy me. The grown up rational thing is to have a sinking fund. Every year £x gets set aside from the budget for when a public building needs capex renovations. Removes the politics from it.
Instead we end up with things like Parliament renovations. Where it’s put off for so long causing so much ballache because no politician wants to put their name to a massive bill.

I know someone who did work inside a few of the buildings in Downing Street (nothing exciting, just some minor electrical stuff) and he did say he was surprised by how cramped they all are, and didn’t understand why they don’t just knock it down and rebuild it to be more efficient because the costs of running and maintaining it have to be way more than a rebuild would cost.

Yeah now so the houses of parliament and how much is needed to keep that going as the home of the government instead of a modern building

Persevering with something shit because we are too proud of our history or tradition to renovate it is a very British trait

Put the Foreign office in one of the other dozens of Govt/Royal buildings in London, and let the PM have that building for his team to work from as its next door.
Prime Minister should be in something bit better than that place as a residence whilst we are at it. Kensington Palace should be their residence, or something resembling that.
