    1. Certainly AFTER it stops slapping tariffs on everything and anything imported.

I live in Europe, where can you get a brand new $15k EV?

I’m fairly confident they don’t exist here either.

    3. Under Trump they’ve taken away all of the tax incentives for any electrical vehicle, I’m quite honestly surprised that there isn’t an exemption made for Tesla. I don’t see it happening at least until the next election +2 years for any new legislation to be passed.

Its called a golf cart. They just legalized driving them on city streets here with restrictions of course.

    5. What happens is, as costs to produce come down manufacturers prefer higher margins and never having to explain why they ever cost as much as they did to begin with.

Batteries abroad are about to see a significant price drop. Legacy and established start-up manufacturers will avoid adopting sodium-ion due solely for fact of having to explain it costs MUCH less than lithium-ion.

If EVs were allowed to be sold at a fair margin, ICE sales would be cannibalized in ways auto manufacturers do not want to deal with.

    6. We haven’t had $15k gas cars since like 2008 at the latest. $15k EVs will likely never happen.

    7. The US auto industry, import brands included, depends on a pricing model that inflates the value of vehicles well past what any rational consumer would consider fair. If you let people import NHTSA road legal vehicles at the $15k price point, then the profit margin for the entire low end car market would sag, because anyone in the market for a $22k Corolla or $30k Chevy Bolt would gladly spend half that to get a comparable vehicle.

The only way this happens is if there’s a global crash test/emissions standard that would allow vehicles to easily be brought across markets.

Automakers are very against this idea as it would make it harder for them to segment premium, higher margin vehicles into wealthier markets, and would make it difficult to produce econobox death traps for low income markets.

    9. There are two major lobbying groups who have extremely strong incentives for this not to happen:

      1) Domestic Auto Manufacturers
      2) Auto Dealerships.

Both have spent piles and piles of money on keeping cars expensive.

    10. It will never happen. And it not just because it’s EV the emissions standards have made making cheap cars not worth it and companies rather make these big ass cars for bigger profit to comply with the emission stuff. Only way I see cheap cars comeback is if the emission standards are drastically lowered to 1990 levels which I doubt will happen

No company making 15k evs is profitable. Chinese companies were subsidized by the government, and only a handful of companies are profitable but it isn’t due to their 15k throwaway cars, Xiaomi and Huawei make their money from other tech, BYD more expensive vehicles are better sellers and more profitable.

That idea’s implementation is overdue worldwide by 10 years at least.

Innovators and early adopters have been satisfied and most of that content could be on Corporate leasing plans.

The majority have been waiting a long time to get onboard at the right price into new technology.

The battery is the ‚be all end all‘ in this technology adventure.

Won’t happen. The US has abandoned the ones that could be cheap your sedans or compacts. Instead US car manufacturers have gone all in on SUVs, trucks, and crossovers

    14. Toyota sells a 15k gas pickup truck that would sell like crazy in the US. But our government lobbyists said no because nobody would buy the other 80k pickups. 15k electric cars will never be sold here. If they do import them they will mark them up to 40k.

Ppl need to take/fill the jobs at Slate and then they need to import everything as mentioned in the other posts.

You’re not going to get $15K EVs except for NEVs (neighborhood vehicles).

The US already has those, but they just don’t do the job people buy cars for typically so they don’t sell. They are probably outsold by side-by-sides now.

If you want $15K EVs that are streetable the US laws will have to change to allow (essentially) Kei cars. And then there can be EVs of those for maybe around those prices. They still are kind of limited in scope but there is already proven demand for them. That demand my be small but it may grow if things are opened up.

My Slate truck… preordered claim was about $20K. They are now saying “mid $20Ks.”

    18. When capitalism is reigned in. When supply chain exploitation is eliminated. When destructive/non-constructive capitalist processes are eliminated such as accelerated senescence. When sustainability in environment and producibility are complimentary. That’s when.

The little shitbox cars in Idiocracy were probably around that price so as soon as we achieve Idiocracy, we’ll have them.

      Won’t be long now.

That would cripple the used car and base model markets. So when will the US get $15k EVs? **Never.**

    21. It’s no mystery as to why we can’t have affordable EVs. Domestic automakers lobby (bribe) the US government to protect their general interests.

While they produce mid to shitty-level EVs that can’t compete with EV imports. Meanwhile imported EVs have been tariffed over the last two generations to the point they are locked out of the US market. It’s not profitable to import a $30k or less EV that ends up being $60k off the lot. And what is available to purchase there’s little to no choice that still costs $60k.

BYD is making amazing EVs less than $30k or less that will never make it to the American market unless things change. The domestic automakers have stifled competition to lock in your $$$ for their Craptastic offerings.

    22. Never will any new car be under $20K.

I think there is 1 nissan that still is, but it’s likely a package that is rare (5 speed manual or something).

    23. WatchStoredInAss on

People can’t pose and act rich while drowning in debt if they’re driving $15k EVs.

    24. I’m going with never. Maybe $25k if we let BYD in, or somehow convince our automakers to actually start trying to optimize for value instead of just capturing the market forcing everyone into an $80k truck.
