It shouldn’t and probably is more prevalent in big cities where people live more anonymously. Taking shopping baskets and carts away from stores is theft.

    >they’re not identifiable in the photo

That’s clearly Frau Schmidt. I’d recognize those hand veins anywhere.

  3. In some regions they started putting these things on the shopping baskets that beep when you try to leave the store so it’s impossible to steal them

Totally normal, even to the point of being cliched. I have five of them and a team of huskies. Can’t wait for the snow!!

  5. I normally see people roaming around with the big shopping cart in Berlin, maybe the basket is the previous level before evolving into full homelessness

Did it say Rewe on the basket? You can buy those things on their own too. I have one at home as well, but I basically only use it as a second laundry basket.

Most of German big cities in my opinion are on downward slope to lawlessness, lack of respect to surroundings, filled with trash. Frankfurt is a prime example – despite all the financial leverage a walk around main train station can tell you the story.

I mean. Not common, but this does not make it in the top 20 weirdest things I’ve seen in an S-Bahn.

  9. My local Edeka has thrown out all the baskets because they constantly got stolen, and now you have to get a „Gittertier“ even for small grocery runs. I hate people.

  10. A shop clerk in Munich told me that they do not have any shopping baskets anymore because they were all stolen.

  11. Munich here, yes I recognised this too. Shopping carts and Supermarket baskets are taken for personnel use.
We have them also in our deep-level garage.

No, but unfortunately these people exist. There are also people who take Shopping Carts, it’s not many, but they do exist…

In a different chat someone asked why there are no shopping BASKETS in German supermarkets.
Now you know. They are all „borrowed“.

  14. Pretty normal thing. You don’t have to go around trying to steal supermarket baskets to get one. Living anywhere in germany, there’s a chance that one will just appear in front of you while walking around, and you’ll keep it because it’s just kinda funny…

It’s interesting that I haven’t seen this mentioned here, but markets will sell this when they replace them with new ones. That is a posibility of what happened here.
