      It’s going to get worse too.

      Google recently lost an antitrust trial that ruled they monopolized app distribution and app stores on Android. As part of their [proposed remedy](https://liliputing.com/google-and-epic-reach-settlement-in-antitrust-lawsuit/) apps that use their own billing will be formally required to pay up to a 9% fee for doing so, recurring if it’s a subscription. If the judge accepts this solution then we can expect at least a 10% price increase to accommodate this across Netflix, Spotify, Apple Music and any other Android apps using their own payment processing. Probably slightly more as they will have to manage reporting this revenue to Google and whatnot.

      At the same time Apple is currently [compelled by court order](https://daringfireball.net/2025/04/gonzales_rogers_apple_app_store_ruling) to allow apps to use their own payment processing without a fee, but they are in the midst of [appealing](https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/70190916/epic-games-inc-v-apple-inc/) that ruling arguing it is their right to get paid a percentage of whatever you spend. If they win then apps on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV will also need to accommodate whatever fee they decide is appropriate for not using their payment service (previously 27%).

      They should worry about raising service quality and a unified catalog across all streaming services. unless they improve their service people will cancel their subscription and move back to piracy.

      Like Gabe Newell from steam/valve said: piracy is not a price issue, its a service issue

      Deliver quality service and people are willing to pay for it.

      At the current rate of media companies being bought up streaming will get drilled now to one or two services, then the reality of the fuckyoupayme business model will prevail.

      As a slightly older person with hundreds of DVDs/Blu-ray/UHDs, I have left streaming. I have all of my favorite movies, I don’t advertise before my movies play and I always have exactly what I wan to watch. Plex Media Server is the way to go. It takes a while to rip everything, but it is worth it.

      One day we’ll have a streaming service that combines all streaming services, with ads, and only for the low price of $129.99 per month!!

      Only thing this is pushing me towards is plex. Hell I got a Pluto account since they run for free (somehow). I mean the idea is that this was meant to be cheaper than cable. Nobody can reasonably afford this shit.

      My household rotates subscription services and we’ve gone longer between services as prices have gone up. Something that makes this easier is the trend of short TV seasons. You can watch a lot of seasons of TV in one month.

      I nope’ed out of all paid streaming except YouTube premium and haven’t looked back. Gray market solutions have gotten so advanced and intuitive that it is just easier/better (quality) to stay off the subscription services in general.

      Double dipping too. These companies gobble up tax dollars via corporate welfare and then charge these same taxpayers an inflated subscription price.

      Just dropped three prime add ons and will probably be dropping netflix. Done with this crap.

      Yeah I only get any services when they have deals of under $3 a month. If I have to pay full price I get it for a month, binge watch anything good and then cancel it. I can’t imagine ever paying a service $10-20 a month every month. I don’t care about watching new episodes the second they come out.

      I canceled all my streaming services and went back to purchasing DVDs. I picked up a really nice copy of the entire Lord of the Rings with all the bells and whistles at a thrift store this month for $12.

      Same playbook as Uber. Underprice the service to hook people and destroy competition. Not that the cable companies weren’t ridiculous also. 

      I wish the US had any kind of meaningful enforcement against predatory practices.
