Was denken Sie – sollte Irland eine viel größere Waldfläche anstreben? Sollten wir uns auf die Wiederverwilderung/einheimische Arten statt auf kommerzielle Forstwirtschaft konzentrieren?

Yep and the stuff that coillte is replanting create ecological dead zones.

It used to be far lower.

Even outside of woods and forests  the reduction in sheep farming has made a massive difference in west cork /kerry.

    3. Yes everyone knows. Our so called forests are pallet timber maybe not even that. MDF etc

It’ll take generations to get native woodland to a meaningful %.

Our figure is less when you except for plantations of non-native species grown for commercial purposes

It’s really misleading when these numbers count anything other than native forests.

    5. It’s true there are very few natural areas in Ireland, but that’s the metric we should be looking at rather than specifically “forest” which includes spruce plantations. In particular we need to preserve bogs and protect more areas from overgrazing.

Finland and Sweden setting unrealistic expectations

That said we should be aiming for 30%

If I had the money and time I’d be like that lad that rewilded his Manor House

You can see this when you fly over Europe. We don’t have the vast areas of woodland that other countries have

    9. Irish people have a weird relationship with trees. I think that many regard trees as overgrown weeds, dangerous, and only good for firewood. My older relatives especially are like this.

Even just check out rural homes here, with their huge empty lawns. In the UK and Germany, rural homes can barely be seen behind lovely mature trees. Same as the homes of British/German ‚blow ins‘ in West Cork and Kerry. The first thing they do when they buy here is plant, plant, plant.

    10. Most of the 12% is commercial, isn’t it? Actual Irish native trees is something like 2%?

Just an thought but there is a lot of space in Ireland which is not suited for agriculture, they could stick an Irish tree in the ground?

Well, roots help with water retention so planting more would definitely help. Climate changes, water shortage is becoming a thing.

Highly recommend the garlic woodland project they’re solely planting native Forrests and are currently acquiring their second site.

When I came from the US and went out west one of the things that struck me was that there are no trees on most of the mountains, I assume because they’re too rocky.

Let’s just plant lots of those trees the fairies live in so we’ll leave em alone to grow

Lot’s of people are going to start lashing into Coillte and the sitka plantations but you’ve got to look at the big picture. It’s not perfect but these plantations are commercially viable and the product is far more eco friendly than the alternatives like plastics.

We can re-wild and work at conservation of the remaining native forests without getting into a silly back and fort over the most commercially important tree in Ireland. It’s just a distraction.

    16. We needed to cut it down to make room for all the infrastructure and houses.

Good news though that the wooded area of Ireland increased from 1% to 12% over the last 125 years.

This is an incredible achievement, unmatched in any other country in the world.

We should compare ourselves to Iceland, which had similar ancient forests, was reduced to 1% in 1900 and is less than 0.5% in 2025.

    18. To understand how little actual forest we have:

      – A wet warm climate is ideal for mushrooms

      – You would be lucky to fill 1 bag of high tier edible mushrooms between September and October here

      – The number of mushrooms is a joke compared to Poland, Lithuania etc where you can easily collect a car boot amount of mushrooms

be sure to look for local tree planting events coming up! there are several groups that go around the country reforesting & expanding native woodlands. it’s great fun! just make sure to bring good shoes, hats, and a hot drink in a flask since the season for sapling planting is usually february

Less livestock, more trees and subsidise farmers based on trees planted and carbon dioxide captured.

We keep telling how our beef is environmentally friendly compared to the Brazilian one cause of deforestation. But the fact is we cut down our trees over the course of hundreds of years.

where did i say wolves *never* killed anyone? i said they don’t *hunt* us. wolf attacks on people are rare. wolves avoid human contact.

But this doesn’t mean Ireland doesn’t have a lot of trees. The report counts forests, not small woodland areas, groves, hedgerows etc.

Ireland may not have places like the Ardennes or the Black Forest, but it also doesn’t have vast stretches of flat, unbounded fields with barely a tree in sight, like in Germany, Northern France etc.
