The thing that perplexes me about this is that Legault had very clear & recent foresight as to why this was a bad idea/would work out horribly since the UCP in Alberta did nearly the exact same thing in 2020 when it came to family doctor/clinic contracts and we saw a massive exodus ([going from having the most family doctors per-capita of the big 5 provinces in 2019, to second lowest by 2024](https://businesscouncilab.com/insights-category/economic-insights/weekly-econminute-number-of-physicians-per-capita-across-canada/)).
Something that is also potentially funny/interesting about this situation is that a potential mass exodus to Ontario and Atlantic Canada over the next 5+ years post-Legault’s reform could mean that Ontario could see a significant increase in the number of doctors per-capita & Ford would get a PR boost over doing nothing.
People forget that in Canada’s single-payer system, doctors aren’t government employees they’re private businesses. They come out of med school buried in debt, then have to pay for an office, staff, rent, malpractice insurance, and constant continuing education just to stay current. So when a province decides to overhaul how they’re paid, it’s not like they’re tweaking a government salary grid they’re messing with the entire financial structure of a small business run by someone who already spent a decade earning nothing. The higher earnings later in their career aren’t some cushy bonus; they’re basically repayment for years of debt, overhead, and the pressure of a job where getting sued is a constant risk
Reading Legault’s response is hilarious, TBH:

I’m just picturing the guy blowing a gasket. It feels like a literal, „No, not like that!“ meme.
I’m not sure what he expected other premiers to say. „No, despite being desperate for physicians, we don’t want physicians from Quebec!“ He’s acting like the provinces should have some kind of monopolistic no-poach agreement (detrimental to physicians) like what [Google and Apple illegally did](https://chicagounbound.uchicago.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2702&context=law_and_economics).
If a high-demand employee decides on his own to jump ship, you welcome him, like Ford did. I think that Legault is uncomfortable in the deep *shade* carried in Ford’s comments:
