Time to hoard toilet paper!
A friend of mine was a US Army CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) Officer. Her units job was to provide decontamination and containment for chemical, biological, and nuclear attacks against the US.
But, around 2014-2015 she was deployed to Africa for the better part of a year to help with containment operations for the Ebola outbreak that was occurring there. Her stories were devastating and that was *with* a full and active response of both the US government (Military, state department, USAID, CDC, etc), European equivalents, and NGOs. Around 12,000 people still died.
The US cutting support efforts to these countries and focusing military operations on the western hemisphere has to potential for these kinds of outbreaks to become *far worse*. I hope that this can be contained and doesn’t become a full outbreak, because I don’t see the same resources coming to bear as last time.
For all these decades, everyone thought that a Pandemic was going to come out of Africa. Then, boom, COVID from China. I’m gonna bet the next Pandemic is going to come out of Not-Africa. Too many eyes on them.
