The story is poorly written, but a new design for a telescope has been exciting to me ever since I sat in on a presentation for the proposed optics for the JWST, in 1995.

This design (which the story does not say) is for a more powerful spectrograph. This design would not image the exoplanets very well, but it would be effective for getting spectra, indicating the chemical composition of the exoplanet’s atmosphere.
