There are lots of Russian native speakers outside Russia, the real number should be closer to 200m

Bengali and Japanese are most outstanding to me; it shows just how dense and how much growth their home countries have

Portuguese is also spoken in some African countries such as Angola and Mozambique

    5. German has just about 100+ million.

Edit: Actually it’s just below 100 mill.

    6. Well, isn’t Angola blue? It’s the official language and native to around 70% of the population.

Punjabi also has more than 100 million plus native speakers, that’s missing on this map

People are confusing „native language“ with „administrative language“

Yes, many African countries use French as their administrative language. No, the people there aren’t „native“ speakers, they learn the language because they have to, for official business. It’s similar to how Europeans learn English fluently, without that being their native language.

NOBODY is accusing these people of not being fluent. Nobody is claiming they don’t speak French. But that doesn’t make French their native language. It’s not the same as in Latin America, where the local native languages went almost extinct and supplanted by Spanish and Portuguese.

Edit: Very good map, OP. Ignore the hate comments.

You have to include Angola and Mozambique at least for portuguese

What is the decision-making process here for which countries are being colored? Like why are Canada, the US, the UK, Ireland, NZ, and Australia all colored for English but then countries in Africa, Asia, and Guyana in South America which speak English are not? Or why are countries like Kazakhstan and Belarus not colored for Russian?

It doesn’t make sense and is inconsistent regardless of if you’re using a „where native speakers live“ or „where it’s an official language“ definition.

    11. Austria, Switzerland a part of Belgium and Germany speak german – Should be just above 100.000.000 people.

If you combine Germany, Switzerland and Austria you might get to 100 million as well, very close though.

Are we not gonna count russian language as a native for most of the post-USSR area?
Here in belarus WAY more people have russian as their native language than people actually speaking belarusian as their native.

You missed Indonesian. Spoken by almost 300million people as a native language.

wouldnt places like SA have minority native english speakers? I feel like we’re potentially missing quite a few million people here

    16. Bit odd to give so much of China „Mandarin“ when the native language of most areas is the local dialect (many of which are mutually intelligible with Mandarin), but to give Hindi only 345 million (especially since they are choosing not to include Urdu which is, for all intents and purposes, the same language)

    17. IAMLOSINGMYEDGE on

Indonesian should definitely be on here. It might be in addition to a local dialect, but it’s not like it’s a truly foreign language to Indonesians that learn it.

    18. Indonesia? 250+ million people who all speak Indonesian. If you wanna get real sneaky, you can put Brunei and Malaysia in there and you easily get 400 million.

What do you define as Native? I was born in Indonesia and that was the first language I spoke and I am still fluent today, however my English has surpassed my Indonesian and I think in English. So what’s my native language then?

    19. Iran has a significant Arab speaking minority.
I don’t know how much longer Iran will last but they are still there!
