On a slightly unrelated note MrsLapsed and I, along with a few other friends, have floated the idea of house sharing once we reach retirement. I’ve house shared in the past and know that it comes with it’s own issues, but for a group of like minded retirees it sort of makes sense

It’s going to be difficult as an older renter looking to houseshare to find somewhere because of all the ageism.

The Cameron and Brexit contingency have shit lives. I reckon more austerity will solve this

By the time swathes of millennials and Gen Z end up in this exact position the people who engineered the conditions for us to end up struggling to afford a home will be long dead. It really does worry me what’s coming down the line when people are currently struggling to save minimal amounts for retirement and the state pension as it is looks unsustainable now but there’s no appetite to deal with that either.

    5. I saw something the other day that seemed like a good idea.

5 retired couples all sold up and rented a large hmo. Don’t get me wrong it was a “large” house I’d suspect it was used as a nursing home prior.

They all had their own space  and bathroom’s shared a huge dining room and living room.

They seemed super happy with the situation.

I can only assume they made a good chunk of money selling their homes prior.

Ah well, they might actually do something about housing if the over 55s are talking about it.

    7. I’m renting right now and i really like it. I don’t have to fix anything or mow the grass or any of the responsibilities that owning brings. If i ever get tired of this place i can cancel my lease and move.

For Gen Z it doesnt matter, they wull be stuck in their room on their tablet, laptop or smartphones for most of the day skme forced interaction would be good for them

They do say loneliness is affecting the elderly so in a weird way this might help.

Would be better with family or friends though.

Don’t really have much sympathy – if older people need to rent the problem isn’t older people need to rent so now it also affects them, it’s that others don’t get the luxury of living alone for decades like most in this story and now have to share.

And then look the first person in the story retired early as they’re not even legally at retirement age yet, clearly took their teacher pension at 60 with no fucking plan and moved from elsewhere to London at retirement. Lmao? Imagine whining you have to flat share when you semi retired before your state pension and move to the most expensive place in the country. People who already live here will be flat sharing until death, not only at 65+. And they won’t be able to afford to semi retire early and do some as hoc self employment. My retirement age is 68 – why would I quit my job years before that and bitch I have no money?

Imagine this story if it was a 30 year old. Yeah so I quit my full time job and moved to the most expensive part of the country and I can’t afford my own place. You’d rightly tell them they’re a moron then.

I’m pretty sure in Europe and even the US they make provisions for single persons housing, yet here people just get stuffed into house shares, which doesn’t seem right.

I’m approaching 40 and this is my future. It’s really annoying that it’s only getting talked about here because it affects older people. We’ve known this was coming for years and nobody bothered to lift a finger for fear of upsetting the NIMBYs.
