Hallo zusammen! Ich bin ein Student aus Finnland, der nach Spanien kam, um das berühmte Tomatina-Festival in Buñol zu erleben. Stattdessen ging ich mit Traumata, Verletzungen und ohne Gerechtigkeit davon. Hier ist meine Geschichte, wie ich ausgeraubt wurde – und warum Hunderten anderen jedes Jahr das Gleiche widerfährt.
Am 27.08.2025, zwischen 11:30–12:05 Uhr, mitten im Tomatenfest, ist meine Goldkette ca. 3000 Euro wurden mir gewaltsam vom Hals genommen. Ich hatte blaue Flecken, Schmerzen und einen Schock – der Vorfall ruinierte für mich den Rest des Festivals mit anhaltender Angst und Trauma.
Zu allem Überfluss wurde auch noch mein Freund bestohlen – sein Portemonnaie. Wir haben den Raub schnellstmöglich gemeldet. Wir gingen vom Festivalgelände zur Zivilpolizeistation Buñol Guardia, wo wir unsere Beschwerden einreichten. Es gab noch mehr Menschen wie uns, die in diesem Chaos Wertsachen verloren haben.
Später am Tag überprüfte ich meine GoPro-Aufnahmen im Hotel. Eindeutige Videobeweise zeigten den Diebstahl, darunter das Gesicht des Verdächtigen, ein rotes lokales Armband und sogar, dass er meine gestohlene Kette in der Hand hielt. Ich habe versucht, sie persönlich bei den Polizeibehörden einzureichen, aber alle meine Bemühungen scheiterten.
Obwohl ich die FIR eingereicht und Videos, Fotos und Angaben zum Verdächtigen vorgelegt hatte, wurde ich zwischen den Stationen Buñol und Valencia hin- und hergeschickt und mir wurde lediglich gesagt, ich solle „alles per E-Mail senden“. Ein paar Monate später habe ich keine Updates mehr. Leider geht es nicht nur mir so. Jedes Jahr werden in diesem Chaos 100–200 Menschen ausgebeutet.
Die Festivalleitung und die örtlichen Behörden wissen, dass dies jedes Jahr passiert. Dennoch: – Keine richtigen Warnungen/Schilder für Touristen. – Keine vorbeugenden Kontrollen. – Keine Verantwortung. Durch diese Nachlässigkeit sind Besucher einer ernsthaften Gefahr ausgesetzt.
Ich bin wegen der Freude und der Kultur gekommen. Stattdessen verließ ich Spanien mit einem Trauma, finanziellen Verlusten und dem Gefühl, vom System im Stich gelassen zu werden. Dies ist nicht die Erfahrung, die ein Tourist machen sollte.
Ich teile meine Geschichte, weil Schweigen nur Kriminelle schützt. Ich hoffe, dass meine Meinung dazu beiträgt, zu verhindern, dass andere auf dem Tomatina-Festival den gleichen Horror erleben.

While I’m really sorry for what you went through, it sounds traumatising, why on Earth would you wear a 3000€ gold chain to a festival where you’re literally just going to be surrounded by crowds and get tomato juice chucked all over it?
I’m sorry but who the hell goes to the tomatina with a gold chain. You clearly didnt think this through.
Not trying to excuse the thief, but you went to a massive event in a poorer country with thousands of people in a small space and really didn’t think about leaving the gold chain home?
Take this as a lesson and move on.

Well, that’s terrible, and the fact that the justice works so badly too, but… It should be obvious that wearing something so expensive or even the wallet to the tomatina isn’t a good idea

On the other hand. The festival itself is not a scam. There’s scams around it like most things.
I’m really sorry you went through that! You obviously didn’t deserve that. For the future I recommend avoiding expensive jewelry in a context like that, I have to be honest wearing a 3k chain somewhere like that is a terrible, terrible idea. There’s tons of people, everyone is distracted, etc. And also unfortunately when things are stolen it’s very, very rare they find their way back to their owner. Again sorry you had to go through this and for the future (not just in Spain, anywhere in the world where you might find yourself in such a chaotic context) I hope you’ll take different precautions!

Bro, rule number 1: never wear jewellery, expensive watches, etc to festivals, concerts and places like that.

I am sorry you had this experience, I would never go to such an event wearing a 3000€ gold chain but to each their own. Events like la Tomatina are now full of tourists and therefore very juicy for pickpockets. I also wish the police would be more proactive but I assume they are way over their heads, Buñol is a small town with less than 10.000 inhabitants so the police force is not huge, for La Tomatina, they normally get aroun 22.000 people, that is more than double of their normal population.
I mean… I wouldn’t call it a tourist scam, it’s a tradition that’s attracting more and more tourists, but it is what they say it is
On another note, going to messy crowded festivals like this with valuables is a big no no. Gold chains, fancy watches, wallets bursting with bills? Your case was probably drowned by another 100 pickpocket victims
I’m sorry to hear that. Crowded areas and festivals like this are not a safe space. There are a lot of pick pocking and sexual abuse opportunities. And Spanish law and law enforcement usually does little as long as they don’t attack with strong violence or a weapon.

It ain’t a tourist scam, it’s a common spanish problem. Police don’t give a f. about theft reports. Don’t ask me why, but that’s the truth. Even with iphones/airpods thefts, where the location is available, police won’t bother going in search for the device stolen.
People here in the comments are part of the reason why this doesn’t change: it seems it’s more your problem for wearing a chain in the street than the police’s fault for not doing shit.
So you have proof but post 2 pictures with no proof at all pointing a face of possibly an innocent man?
