Israel is blocking shipments of bottles for baby formula and over a million syringes needed to vaccinate Gazan children from entering the Strip, the UN has said.
Unicef, which along with the World Health Organization (WHO) is running a major child vaccination campaign in Gaza, said it was facing serious challenges getting 1.6 million syringes and solar-powered fridges to store vaccine vials into the enclave.
Israel claims the items are “dual-use,” meaning they could be used for both civilian and military purposes.
The syringes have been held in Israel since August, when more than 100 aid organisations signed a joint letter calling on Israel to stop the “weaponisation of aid,” said Unicef.
“These items, we’re finding it very hard to get them through clearances and inspections, yet they are urgent,” said Ricardo Pires, a Unicef spokesperson.
Relief agencies have repeatedly said that the quantity of aid getting into Gaza still falls far short of the needs of a largely displaced and malnourished population of over 2 million.
Unicef said more humanitarian aid is getting into Gaza since a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect last month, but some critical items continued to be denied entry by Israeli authorities, including nearly a million bottles of ready-to-use infant formula and spare parts for water trucks.
Cogat, a unit in the Israeli military that oversees the country’s humanitarian work in Gaza, has previously claimed it is not limiting the entry of food, water, medical supplies and shelter items.
Last month, the unit said no fuel or gas would be allowed into the war-torn enclave except for specific needs related to humanitarian infrastructure. It has also accused Hamas of systematically stealing humanitarian goods to resell for profit.

Thing is I don’t necessarily even doubt this claim but I’ve heard the UN cry wolf about famine so much now that at this point I just roll my eyes every time they say anything about Gaza.
