Wohlhabende Ausländer zahlten Zehntausende Pfund, um „Wochenendscharfschützen“ zu werden und während der Belagerung von Sarajevo Zivilisten zu erschießen, wie aus Vorwürfen hervorgeht, die von italienischen Behörden untersucht werden.
Es wurde eine Untersuchung zu Behauptungen eingeleitet, denen zufolge Waffenbegeisterte und Rechtsextremisten in den 1990er Jahren mit Scharfschützengewehren in die vom Krieg zerrüttete Stadt gereist seien, um „zum Spaß“ verängstigte Bosnier niederzustrecken.
Den Ausländern aus Italien, den USA, Russland und anderswo wird vorgeworfen, serbische Streitkräfte für die Teilnahme an der Schießerei während des Bosnienkriegs bezahlt zu haben.
Sie seien angeblich aus Sympathie für die serbische Sache, purer Blutdurst oder einer Kombination aus beidem motiviert gewesen, sagen die Ermittler.
Serbien hat die Behauptungen zurückgewiesen.
Doch Zeugen und italienische Ermittler behaupten, es habe sogar eine Preisliste für die gezielten Tötungen gegeben – Ausländer würden mehr bezahlen, um bewaffnete und uniformierte Kinder und Männer zu erschießen.
Laut der Zeitung La Repubblica zahlten die Amateur-Scharfschützen umgerechnet 80.000 bis 100.000 Euro, um an diesem gruseligen „Sport“ teilzunehmen.

Humans are capable of so much evil and depravity. And we’re just now learning of this thirty something years later.

I fail to see why either gun enthusiasts and/or far-Right extremists would be specifically interested in killing people. Do left wing extremists not want to kill people? Surely it would be political specific to the region, not based on a left/right divide? As for gun enthusiasts, well, most of those are not interested in killing people. So why would that be a specific criteria for this situation?
I don’t doubt the exact same thing is not happening in Gaza. There were reports that some days were dedicated to sniping on certain body parts, like stomach, necks, and head.
A parallel thing is going on in Ukraine, with mercenaries recruited to operate out of „foreign legions“. The difference is that they’re not paying for it, they’re getting paid. And they don’t admit they’re doing it for pleasure, they’re „resisting tyranny“.
It’s not the rich we have to worry about, it’s the state of mind that allows a person to justify himself ravaging and slaughtering people he does not even know. All these people feel justified, none of them would admit to being a criminal and a murderer.
Interestingly, such mercenaries have no rights whatsoever under the Geneva Conventions or any other. Russia could take every single one they capture and post videos of them getting hanged or shot in the head as a warning to others not to come to Ukraine. As it is, they only infrequently convict them of crimes and will certainly release them all when the hostilities end.
But the Russian Federation is supposed to be the „bad guys“ and a threat to all humanity, and that’s supposedly why these killers are there in the first place. That’s how screwed up the world is.
