    1. I’ve linked to the news release in the post above. In this comment, for those interested, here’s the link to the peer reviewed journal article:

      https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0376871625003138

      From the linked article:

**Cannabis use associated with a reduction in alcohol intake**

**A new study reports that for some heavy drinkers, using cannabis may be associated with consuming less alcohol. This reduction in drinking appears linked to a decrease in alcohol craving that occurs after cannabis use**, a finding that offers a potential mechanism for why some people might substitute one substance for the other. The research was published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

When the researchers analyzed the data, they found a notable pattern in overall alcohol consumption. On average, participants drank approximately 25 percent fewer alcoholic drinks during the session where they first used cannabis compared to the session with alcohol alone. The mean number of drinks consumed dropped from 2.09 in the alcohol-only session to 1.60 in the session that included cannabis.

    2. I think this is why that bill to repeal the hemp act is probably going to pass. The alcohol lobbyists are pushing it hard.

    3. This is why the pro-confederate pro prison for profit party is fighting tooth and nail to keep it illegal. They are in with the alcohol lobby.

    4. From personal experience, when you’re stoned alcohol is just hard to get down. That simple. Brain just says meh.

It makes sense but I wonder if the spins ever come up in these studies. Whenever I drink i actively avoid weed and vice versa.

It’s seriously just absolutely awful. I imagine not unlike damaging your inner ear which knocks your balance all off and you get super nauseous.

Meaning, yes, smoking more weed makes sense it would mean choosing alcohol less. But also choosing both can make you feel like you’re dying.

    6. Psych0PompOs on

I used to only ever drink a lot when I didn’t have access to weed, just never preferred it but would take it over sobriety. I’ve known a lot of people who are the same, it’s being a drug addict just in general rather than caring too much about what it is. Alcohol is highly accessible, so it’s a reliable source of inebriation.

Sigh. I unfortunately have a broken kneecap that was sustained when I tripped hiking. Been going at it daily for years and it’s been a real rough month and a half…

No surgery but the pain was absolutely horrible. The doctor gave me absolutely nothing to help with the pain. Regardless of how you feel about them, I’d say that’s one situation where I truly would have benefited from them.

Three weeks in, I found out about H4CBD. It was a total life saver and helped me get some semblance of pain relief.

Unfortunately, due to the hemp ban, it will not be available any more and, as it will be banned, id assume that it will hinder any possible research on this compound that helped me sooo much.

A great caveat was also the fact that I barely touched a drop of alcohol when using it and had no desire whatsoever.

    8. Cannabis is sometimes the only thing keeping me from drinking. About 5 months sober now, and I don’t think it would have been possible without it.

    9. 10000% me. I started drinking WAY less after I started smoking pot. I still love a beer after a puff, but since I’m already blazed I don’t need the beer to get intoxicated, and its really easy to just have one or less. I used to be 2-4 beers a night at home, more if I was going out.

Also, the CBD molecule seems to have some anti-craving properties, which is why people often have success using some CBD (either via hemp or marijuana) to help cut back / trade a less serious CBD addiction for the more serious ones like opiates or alcohol.

Pot has other problems it’s introduced into my life, but overall they’re infinitely better than the alcohol related ones.

100%. I use marijuana to regulate my heavy drinking. I’m in no way shape or form an alcoholic but when I do drink socially (once a month or two) I’m a heavy drinker. When I get to that point where I know I should stop and worry about going to bed to have a decent day the next day I just roll one up smoke it and that urge to keep drinking just goes away. It also works with a really small amount of THC as low as 1%.

    11. GLP-1 agonists also show significant efficacy (tentatively) in reducing (you still need to want to reduce and put some effort in) alcoholism cravings without negatively affecting mood. Another promising target I’m seeing is ketohexokinase inhibitors, which seem to nearly completely block the liver damage caused by alcohol. I personally think we’re really close to seeing a cure for severe alcoholism, which has to date been extremely hard to treat. Many of us know people that drunk themselves nearly or absolutely to death, it’s very common.

Having options to treat alcoholism in no way hurts the sales of it; if anything keeping your customers alive and minimizing negative perception definitely won’t hurt.

    12. Cannabis does a lot of amazing things that are beneficial to ones health, which is exactly why it’s illegal.

    13. HerbalIQ2025 on

That lines up with what we’re seeing more than you may know.  Cannabis seems to take the edge off alcohol cravings for some people. Science points to the endocannabinoid system (ECS) helping regulate reward and stress pathways that drive drinking behavior. When cannabinoids activate the ECS, it can rebalance dopamine and calm those “need another drink” signals. It’s not a cure for alcoholism, but it’s an interesting harm-reduction tool that deserves more research. Has anyone noticed, if the effect holds up for people who use low-dose or CBD-dominant products too?  Curious.

Purely anicdotal but cannabis has been a huge help in staying off alcohol. Haven’t had a drink in 15 months now.

    15. TheFlyingBoxcar on

My sample size of one (me) absolutely confirms this. I used to drink a few beers everyday and go heavy on the weekends. Now that I smoke/edible, I might have a couple of beers a month. Now drinking feels like the poison it actually is.

    16. Allinallisallweare02 on

When I’m high I’m not necessarily dying for a drink, but when I’m drunk it makes me really want to smoke a joint (or anything really)

    17. LithiumWalrus on

As someone who has struggled with alcohol addiction, getting used to consuming both at the same time became the norm and I craved the other whenever I had one of them.

    18. I have been told by recovering alcoholics that they are on „marijuana maintenance“

    19. I was a hard alcoholic, 40 a night. One day I smoke weed and had my booze next to me. Fell asleep woke up the next day sober. I didn’t stay off the drink but but for a couple nights after years of daily drinking I stopped. No shakes even.

    20. catchinNkeepinf1sh on

I have pretty quit drinking other then maybe 2-3 times a yr, but do vape my weed daily.

Works better for me as i can still cook after as when i used to drink more when I was younger, i could never stop at 1 or 2.

    21. And this is why they’re trying to ban it. The alcohol lobby is pushing hard for it for sure.

Here in Tennessee, regulation of THC and hemp products will be transferred from the board of agriculture to the Alcoholic BEVERAGE Commission in 2026.

What does the hemp plant have to do with alcoholic beverages???

    22. SoCalThrowAway7 on

I personally stopped drinking entirely after. That doesn’t mean I have a healthy relationship with weed but I definitely prefer it how I ever felt during or after drinking

    23. Oregonrider2014 on

I was on the verge of alcoholism when I was 23 [9yrs ago] but fortunately recognized the problem.

I started pot instead. I hate drinking now and smoke/take an edible once on weekdays or twice a day on weekends now ever since. I take breaks sometimes for weeks, but its completely killed any lasting desire to drink.

Most I do now is taste test a wine occasionally with my friend from California. I absolutely hate the feeling of being buzzed or drunk now its quite a contrast.

Im gonna quit smoking joints at all and swap to edibles exclusively in a few years to save my lungs while I’m still young.

Thats my lived experience anyway that agrees with this

    24. MysteriousWon on

Well, I’m just one person, but whenever I would get high, it would make me actually want a beer.

Actually, weed was generally the catalyst for getting me to overindulge in multiple things that I would be trying to limit or stay away from.

Cutting weed out altogether was much better for my overall self-control and maintenance of good habits.

5 1/2 years sober thanks to cannabis and the never-ending love, cate and support of AA

    26. BobbyBrewski on

It’s true. Once I smoked I realized that the feelings I got from smoking were way less harsh than the ones I got whenever I was drinking and I stopped drinking almost immediately.

    27. MSnotthedisease on

I got too good at getting drunk, so I had to retire. Cannabis helped that transition not be too shaky

    28. Just from my own personal anecdotal experience, yeah, I’d absolutely rather be high than drunk. Being stoned actually feels good, while being drunk usually doesn’t. Also, when drunk, I lose basically all my faculties and fine motor skills. I’m a professional guitarist, so that’s no good. 🙂 But when stoned, I lose none of that, and actually „feel“ more creative – again, I understand that’s not scientific and just my experience, but that’s how it feels, and it’s supported by simply listening to things I’ve recorded when stoned – I sound great and don’t appear to have lost any motor skills. When drunk, my playing is all over the place and obviously suffers from a loss of coordination and motor skills. I don’t know how the rockers of the 70s did it. 😉 So, not surprised at all. I like smoking pot, but I actively avoid alcohol, and the comparison between the two is a no-brainer.

    29. cmdrtheymademedo on

Honestly makes sense. If you get stoned then drink you are more likely to get sick. Especially if you are really baked (comes from personal experience so results may differ )

This is why I’m down almost 60 pounds since February 1st. The lack of lust I feel for a bottle of wine is sweet relief. It’s no longer planning out my drinking but instead wondering if I can get away with faking holding a drink. Oh, and then there’s menopause in play now, so I no longer tolerate a single glass of red; it’s white now.

Having new thoughts again is a lovely change of pace as well.

    31. Only a personal anecdote, because I love my beer. But after I take just a small hit of pot I tend to switch to NA beer for most of the night.

    32. Elegant_Section8225 on

I only smoked weed. I didn’t start drinking until I was in the USN and couldn’t chance getting a piss test.
