You can trust people, but you shouldn’t.

As often with international surveys, the wording of the question in different languages likely matters a lot.

In China you can trust people to not kill you, because the surveillance state will catch and punish the killer.

But you can NOT trust people to not scam you, the government doesn’t care if you gave away your money because you got scammed.

So people are still very suspicious of strangers not because of physical danger but because they might try to scam money out of you.

Mnie tam nie ma on stracił bardzo szybko prace ale ludzie nie mają żadnych hamulców nie doceniają żadnej pomocy nawet gdy są na dnie. Myślał że znalazł frajera od którego wyciąga kase a nie że ktoś się nad nim ulitował gdy nie miał co jeść. Nigdy mu nie ufałem ale jakieś granice trzeba mieć. Nie można nikomu ufać nawet rodzinie a co dopiero obcemu. Więcej szacunku miała kobieta śpiąca w uk na ulicy patrzę śpi tłum ludzi ją mija jak powietrze podeszłem powiedziałem standardowy tekst na powitanie bo spała dałem kase i odeszłem mówiąc miłego dnia. stałem niedaleko otwieram energetyka a ona mnie mija przechodzi patrzy pyta czy to byłem ja? Tak Ty! Dziękuję . Dwa razy mi dziękowała obca kobieta ale szczerze mimo że tam mają takie wychowanie. A ten polak z holandi? China’s numbers are definitely not true since I’ve been to China many times and from what I’ve seen and heard, it’s definitely not a high trust society

how can trust be measured

I wonder how much this is skewed by the consequences of wrong trust.  We know people don’t always answer the actual question asked.  

If I lived somewhere with 5% of the population is armed violent gangs and another 10% are selfish and amoral, even if I thought everyone else was OK, I might be tempted to say no even though I think the majority actually are.

The Chinese are really good at solipsism (saying one thing and meaning another). On what earth is China a high-trust society?

Since I was a kid, my parents told me to not talk to strangers, because they can very frequently be kidnappers. The Chinese also do not use their real name on social media. Most chinese also believe that bribery is a necessary part to do business, and that you stand no chance in court against a rich or powerful person.

Yet when answering the survey “can most people be trusted”, they would gleefully say yes, out of some Confucian politeness. (Maybe I would too)
