This is shocking to me. I really thought they were going to dismantle every progress.

The SC has made some truly godawful decisions over the years, glad they’re preserving *some* of our civil liberties. Though I personally would have preferred they did revisit the issue, and positively affirm it again, rather than just decline to hear it.

Thank god, some good news.

I think the nightmare of nullifying people’s unions and the legal clusterfuck from that probably did it. Imagine the headache alone with estate matters and a spouse not automatically entitled on death to beneficial interests?

My guess is that they don’t see her case having merit due to her multiple divorces. They will wait for a plaintiff who doesn’t have the same amount of baggage

Since ending Roe didn’t cost them 2024, I wasn’t expecting them to keep this. I guess its on some level their actual principles which is really fucking weird but I STILL 99% sure they have none.
Good on them here and now we can stop worrying about Loving V Virginia too.

Wow the best thing I’ve heard from the court in many a month
Also obligatory fuck that fucking goblin Kim Davis

I like this, but can you imagine the Democratic turnout in ’26 if half the states suddenly had initiative petitions to legalize it?

Probably a good idea, because if they proceeded, it would have dominoed the end of the supreme court

I’m glad the ruling stands

Somewhat surprising, given Justice Thomas’s recent statements. I did say, though, that a good electoral shellacking might sober up the conservative justices, because they can be impeached by a Dem Congress. Not likely, yes, but still possible if the public turns on the Republicans.

If they were ever going to reverse Obergefell, it wasn’t going to be through the Kim Davis case.
That’s been effectively over and done with for years. She’s just been wasting time and other people’s money.

What a relief.
My pessimistic side says they did this to allow the shutdown ending to slide behind this in the news cycle.

> Instead, the court denied an appeal from Kim Davis, the former Kentucky county clerk who now faces hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees for refusing to issue marriage licenses after the court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges allowed same-sex couples to marry.
As she should for refusing to do her duty, and then bogging down the court systems with her stupidity.

Very glad, but I wasn’t sure this would happen. The far right justices are out of control, thankfully they recognize that this is a major loosing issue for the Reps and don’t want to risk an even bigger midterm loss.

„the former clerk argued that the First Amendment’s religious protections should shield her from legal liability“
That’s not how this works. When you’re a public servant, you perform your duties regardless of your religious beliefs. Because guess what, the people whom you serve don’t necessarily share your same religious beliefs. If you don’t want to go against your beliefs, find another job.
There is a reason separation of church and state is so important.
