    1. Stupid American military, making me hike my tube and ammo everywhere when I could have been shooting from the MRAP the whole time.

I always thought it was clever when they’d delay the mortar launches with ice to allow them to get away before the counter battery radar finds them.

    3. Do they then casually drive past to make sure they actually hit anything remotely close to the actual target?

    4. Had those guys lived another year their tinnitus could have kept their goats awake.

The vietcong had better tactics against US bases. One team used to setup sticks at calculated angles so that the mortar and rocket teams could quickly shoot and scoot without needing any calculations. This reduced the time the teams needed to be stationary at one spot.

My first thought was Oprah Winfrey: You get a CAB! and you get a CAB! EVERYONE gets a CAB!

2007 was the “replacement referee season” version of fighting in Iraq in a lot of the country.

The combat vets and professional military members who had continued to fight after the IRGC was disbanded had mostly been killed off. The foreign fighters who were being trained in camps in and out of Iraq had either been killed, returned home to fight their own insurgencies, or been forced into a few pockets in a weird version of siege warfare.

The true believers and lifelong extremists were being freed from prisons around the region and trained to the west, while the Shia insurgency was being refocused on keeping Baghdad from becoming stable under coalition rule. They really needed chaos to be their tool to sew distrust in the Interim Government we were trying to legitimize.

So we saw a lot of goofy half baked shit during that period. It ramped back up later in the year when many groups saw the Bush Surge as proof that they’d been wrong about waiting out our willingness to commit resources. But mostly, there was dumb shit like this, a lot of poorly made IEDs, and some idiot being paid to blindly fire a PKM belt in the general direction of coalition forces. And some absolutely Benny Hill style attempts to swarm and overrun American military outposts and checkpoints.

Good times. Wish we’d known it was the good ol days when we were in them.
