Established as an American college in the 1860s, Boğaziçi has long had an internationalist, liberal-leaning outlook. It’s a big draw for young Turks, with places at a premium and entrance criteria high. The freedom that used to energize Boğaziçi — which has for years now been a focus of opposition to Turkey’s government — is increasingly stifled. These days the school is patrolled by armed riot police and often fenced off with metal barriers.

An entire generation of Turks, more than a fifth of the country’s population of almost 86 million, hasn’t known any other leader than President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Since becoming prime minister in 2003 — and increasingly since 2014, when his presidency began — Erdoğan and his AK Party have sought to recast Turkey’s secular republic, founded in October 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, into a more conservative, Islamist nation. Ongoing protests and an increasing reliance on detentions and arrests indicate that — despite government control of mainstream media and education — resistance to that vision remains unbowed, at least in part.
