That’s sad of that guy to even propose that
I get that those counties would typically support republican candidates and West Virginia is one of the most in favor of republicans in the nation… but don’t these neighboring states just shit on WV nonstop and feel superior to them? WV is one of the worst states in that nation in almost all comparative metrics besides cost of living. I have a feeling a lot of people in the invited counties might not go for this even if they do often feel like their votes and interests get overridden by the populations around the coast/cities.
This would just make Virginia and Maryland an absolute blue wall. By all means, Mr Senator please.
I really don’t think those counties want to give up their subsidies.
If this happens we’d lose that cool piece of trivia that the western most part of VA is further west than Detroit.

You’ve included Virginia’s independent cities in your recreation. WV specifically didn’t invite them, presumably because they’re too blue.
WV’s proposal would make Virginia the only (i think?) state to have enclaves in another state.
I’m originally from Washington County, MD, one of the ones invited. Folks openly laughed at the idea of joining West Virginia; it was not taken seriously at all.
The type of person who thinks this is realistic doesn’t know anything about people in Maryland and VA and what they think of WV. 😆
As a marylander, fine by me. these counties are far more west Virginian culturally than maryland. Almost nothing would change.
This is just stupid because won’t it create a bunch of exclave Virginia towns trapped inside the “new” WV? Look carefully – they didn’t invite a bunch of Virginia towns that are surrounded by VirginiA counties.
Virginia is one of the weird /only? State that has towns separate from counties.
So this proposed idea by WV is so dumb.
WTF would I want to join West Virginia? Yes, the Democrats in Virginia run things right now. Joining West Virginia would only benefit West Virginia. Even pro-Confederate Virginians knew this back in the 1860s. They were like “the mountain people want to leave? Good!”
I say this as someone whose family is from West Virginia. That place is like the land that time forgot and people were shooting each other on the street in front of my great grandmother’s house and when we called the cops they wouldn’t come unless someone was dead.
This move would improve the average IQ for all states involved.
As a Virginian, I’m OK with this.
If they’re going to add all that to West Virginia, why not cede the panhandle to Pennsylvania or Ohio?
Then we can move the WVU- Tennessee football game to Bristol motor speedway and call it a border war.
