Rutte has become a huge cheerleader for NATO, and under his leadership the Europeans have really stepped up their defense budgets and weapons manufacturing. And the defense contractors love it because they are not rolling in vast amounts of money that was not available to them before. So they can thank Putin for that. He has made them all realize the Russian threat is a real threat and they have to do something concrete to defend themselves. They can also thank Trump for threatening to withdraw the US from NATO as that scared the pants off all the Europeans.

We always knew that it would take a few years to return to larger scale production. This is good news!

The West has shaken off its post Cold War optimism that small batches of high precision weapons would be able to handle all future conflicts. The manufacturing of shells had become almost a bespoke industry.

While I love peace, Putin did succeed in one regard. He called the west on its bluff that it could reverse any aggression with its limited stocks.

    3. the only „good“ thing to come out of this conflict is that it has put war back on the menu for most counties in the world.

i say „good“ as someone who has the perspective that the aggression + schemes that russia + china both have will eventually need to be met by force.

if anyone wants to do no war, that would be more than „good.“ just to be clear.

NATO shells are typically more accurate than Russian shells so if the production numbers are similar that’s very good for NATO. The downside for Ukraine is that the vast majority of Russian ammo is going to be used for the war while much of the NATO ammo is going to refill NATO stockpiles and not being sent to Ukraine. There are some non NATO countries that are arming Ukraine though which also helps.

People also need to remember that rearmament is a multi year process and production can’t be ramped up and ramped down very quickly. The fact that NATO is now outproducing Russia is because of decisions made in 2023 and 2024. It’s broadly too late to change things for 2026 but the decisions we make now will change things for 2027 onward. Russia isn’t going anywhere, production takes years to ramp up, the US is unreliable and war takes A LOT of weapons. NATO needs to keep cranking out the weapons and keep scaling up production which will make a broader war less likely and save both money and lives in the long run.

    5. Thank you Putin you have created a military structure that it was plausible would crush you in the event of an attack by you and your country and now it’s an absolute certainty.
