Quebec’s french content rule is one of the reasons I have a VPN. It always propose things I dont care about and can never see what is new but more my style, for Spotify at least.
That seems like a huge waste of time? How do you even impose a quota on YouTube, an app where the content is user-generated?
Adding more French language nonsense is how the current provincial government fishes for votes. Like all of them, it’s short-sighted and will ultimately cause more harm than good.
The way Netflix works right now, if you watch French Canadian content (which is an option!) then they will show you more French Canadian content. If you set your default language, they will remember it.
Mandating a certain % of content is meaningless in a streaming context. It maybe made sense when the amount of airtime was fixed. When you could only show 24h of content in a day, saying x% had to be French was kind of defensible. Now that everyone has a custom feed it makes no sense at all. Netflix or Youtube would have to exclude huge chunks of their catalogs to comply with the law.
Is Quebec a big enough market to push something like this onto those companie? Like at what point do they just shrug and stop offering survive in the province.
