Definitely not surprising. Meanwhile my home state of Kentucky has to put out an official statement yesterday explaining to our citizens that there were no offices up for election for us yesterday, and specifically had to call out that we couldn’t vote on the issue of the NYC Mayor.
Then I woke up this morning to a Facebook filled to the brim with with posts about how based on nothing but this man’s religion, the death of America as we knew it had officially began.

Nothing will happen to these orthodox jews other than they’ll be able to ride the bus for free. They need to chill.

The Orthodox Jews in Borough Park are not Zionists but they’ll be the first to be attacked when the intifada is globalized as they’re the most visibly Jewish.

Mamdani would be thrilled if they all left NYC en masse. Most of his voters would be as well.

a block of entirely orthodox jews? Surely they don’t engage in housing discrimination 🤔

If I’m not mistaken, they often vote as a group in accordance with their rabbai

I can’t believe there are a thousand people in Borough Park actually registered to vote.

The guy who won’t condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada” didn’t get a lot of votes from neighborhoods whose population is largely Orthodox Jewish.

I’m sure that no issues at all will arise from having areas in the same city that vote entirely along ethno-religious lines.

I know New York is a very dense city, but you are looking at 823 votes in a small section of the city. Also, did you expect Orthodox Jews to vote for a Muslim man? That’s just an honest assessment of it. As a geography nerd, however, my biggest takeaway is how both large the turnout was, and how dense the city is for a single voting district to only encompass a few blocks.

As you might expect, Orthodox Jews really really don’t like change. They’re some of the most traditional and conservative people on the planet. Politically they have very little in common with secular Jews, who are majority Left voting and culturally liberal. They tend to fear revolutionary politicians, as they associate them with social and economic upheaval that has historically resulted in serious harm to their communities.
Where polarizing issues like the Israel-Palestinian conflict are concerned, Orthodox Jews really tend not to embrace nuance and tend to see the world in absolutes. So if a politician advocates, like Mamdani, for embracing government policies to sanction the Israeli state and boycott Israeli institutions, they see that as targeting all Israeli individuals and by extension all Jews and Jewish organizations in the US who associate with them, such as for example the volunteer emergency medical organization Hatzalah.
