I’m not sure why Kershaw is at the Globe. His fervent anti (big L) Liberal take on things belongs at The Sun or National Post.

I agree that the clawback threshold for OAS is too high at $93k per individual, but Kershaw makes it sound worse by quoting the per couple value. This has not changed, so it doesn’t represent any new sacrifices by young Canadians. It represents the lack of a break.

Very few older homeowners count on the equity in their homes to fund their retirement. You need a place to live until you’re ready for long-term care. Nobody is travelling the world or going on cruises courtesy of the value of their property. In any case, I’m not sure what the government could do to make real estate more affordable. Pumping government money into that market, by way of subsidizing new homeowners for example, will just inflate prices even further.
