    1. I wish them good luck implementing that in Romania. Not that I am against, but they *need* luck here.

    2. I can see why you might travel a short distance, say Lisbon to Madrid, if you got a good price.

But I can’t see many people taking a 9-hour train (probably more like 10 hours after stopping in Madrid) from Lisbon to Paris, when you can get a plane in half the time and for a fifth of the price…

When I did that very journey by train about 30 years ago, it took about 24 hours, but was about half the price of going by plane.

I absolutely love trains, and hate planes, but it is a really hard sell, even for me.

    3. I’m more interested in the prospect of replacing Russia and Belarus with a new siberian ocean

    4. As a german, I want to apologize in advance to all our european friends wo will be delayed on each and every of these connections going through Germany because of our god-awful fucking broken railway system.

      thats an absolutely terrible plan.

Why the fck is it centred around Berlin of all German cities?? German rail lines are centred around Frankfurt, and then Hamburg and Munich, before Berlin.

These are all just national capitals, which is not the same as the most important cities. Like why is the EU prioritising a tiny city like Ljubljana, while not including the way more important connections of for example Milan to Munich?

      7:30h from Warsaw to Vienna.

There is no way it could compete with airlines if the travel will take this long

    7. Railbaltica branch to Vilnius is shelved because of insufficient funds. It will go from Warsaw to Tallinn through Kaunas and Riga at it was originally intended.

    8. I wonder why this map doesn’t connect Italy to Liubjana and Vienna.

Rome – Venice – Vienna is pretty much a classic of night train travel.

    9. Looking forward to Thessaloniki – Sofia, Warsaw – Tallinn and Lisbon – Madrid

Amazing! Now I can take a plane to Copenhagen to take a train to Berlin to take a train to Warsaw to take a train to Katowice. Takes only 15 hours and 4 mode changes, instead of 16h by direct Flixbus!

Are only capitals shown? Berlin to Copenhagen would be by Hamburg – I think.

    12. Well, you need to see it like that. In Germany they don’t use plans for trains anymore. They just arrive.

There’s nothing high speed about these travel times. Complete lack of ambition.

Lisbon-Madrid-Barcelona-Marseille-Rome would be a very necessary Southern axis. Otherwise this looks like the kind of map Bismark had in mind.

    15. The real problem, I think, is the ‚forced‘ open market.

[notes to self: not too much grandpa talking] I have being using trains in Europe since late 80’s, begin 90’s. A lot has changed. And maybe ‚better‘ for the ’systems‘ and ‚politics‘, but not for the people using it.

The ‚reduced‘ times you see here on the purple lines, are easy reachable if current projects are completed. Such as the Fehnmarn Belt Tunnel.

The real problem is, that despite of having agreed to using one signaling/safety system and one overhead power lines system, there are still many. Even countries as my own, don’t update to the agreed standard with major maintenance, instead prioriticing ‚the old‘ to keep ‚competitors‘ out.

‚In the old days‘ it didn’t matter, almost all train operators were nationalised and they trusted each other. To me, the ‚enforced‘ competition hasn’t made things better. Just lesser connections, lesser serivce and changing uniforms/logo’s every 5-10 years.

Barcelona, Milan, Munich, Rotterdam, London and Istanbul may as well be included

For this plan to work, we need to get the Germans to fix their train system. They’re in the middle of everything, and their trains are notoriously slow and in a constant state of disorganization.

Or, more realistically, we need to move Germany out of central Europe…

    18. In Norway the train takes like 8h from Oslo to Bergen. Funny thing is local trains can also take 8h. 40% of all departures in 2024 where either delayed or cancelled.
Fuck trains I will always choose airplane, unless I am in China or Japan.

In April I took a bus from Tallinn to Warsaw for the sake of economy, it was definitely not worth it. I would rather spend double the money, but travel faster and more comfortably than on a goddamn flixbus. So I am really excited for the railbaltica! Hope the ticket price will be a common ground between the bus and the plane.

Why is there no connection between Amsterdam and Brussels? Are they punishing the Dutch by forcing them to travel through Germany?

    21. Baltic high speed is already under construction and goes via Kaunus not Vilnius. So not sure what this is but I don’t think it’s anything official
