      From the article:

California Republicans filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday seeking to block a newly approved U.S. House map that voters passed as Proposition 50 in last week’s election.

The measure, backed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, redraws congressional boundaries in ways analysts say could help Democrats flip as many as five House seats in next year’s midterm elections. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, claims the new map illegally uses race as a factor to favor Hispanic voters and violates the Constitution’s equal protection and voting rights guarantees.

The suit was filed by the Dhillon Law Group, a California-based firm founded by Harmeet Dhillon, who now serves as assistant attorney general for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice.

God, this admin and its cult are a bunch of crybabies. Such sensitive little snowflakes, aren’t they?

Why do Republicans hate the will of the people so much? You’d almost think they were antidemocracy or something.

    4. Asking for protection of the voting rights act while trying to destroy it elsewhere is a choice

Cope and seethe MAGA. You can’t gerrymander states to your advantage then cry about it when the natural reaction is for the other side to do the same. Or do cry, idc. But fuck off.

    6. To the surprise of absolutely no one. They had the lawsuit pre-prepared and probably had someone at a courthouse with documents in hand waiting for the official announcement on it.

    7. So basically they’re arguing Section 2 of the VRA is unconstitutional and you can’t use race in redistricting.

Which, if a court decides this way, would have the interesting wrinkle of making California’s pre-Prop 50 maps unconstitutional as well (since the redistricting commission had to factor in Section 2 in drawing the maps).

Though as far as I can tell the Prop 50 that California voters passed isn’t tied to a specific map (one has been drawn but it doesn’t seem like it was referenced in the prop), so I think the legislature could just redraw it without factoring in race? And just using political preferences as the main factor.

A clearly stated ballot measure (not quite what you always find from Republicans), clearly presented to the voters (unlike Texas or Missouri), with clear reasoning and limits (again, unlike Texas or Missouri), openly voted on and approved by the voters… and according to Republicans, this is completely illegal.

It’s time to acknowledge Republicans have absolutely no respect or desire for law or democracy. Democracy, the will of the majority of people, and any reasonable compromise (not one where each compromise is a permanent small surrender leading to complete and permanent capitulation) is incompatible with their worldview and platform.

Sue all you want, crybabies. People voted in favor of it. That’s literally democracy in action.

I look forward to the equivalent lawsuit regarding Texas’ redistricting, which wasn’t event put to (checks notes)…a *vote*.

No? Then shut the fuck up.

    11. ProudPainting6850 on

Sue millions of voters. Better yet, sue Texas first for starting this shit.

    12. Lawsuits were filed in Texas too. This was expected. Nothing to worry about.

    13. No-Departure-899 on

I think they are beginning to realize the consequences of their actions.

      ahaha

    14. Just another example of republicans not respecting elections. These people seriously hate America.

    15. If you didn’t see a lawsuit being filed by the republicans you’re blind and or not paying attention, trump will be calling the Supreme Court to intervene too. I don’t think gerrymandering should be done but in this case treasonous trump called for republican states to gerrymander and blue states must do the same if democrats want a fighting chance to have a say in the government or even have a seat

    16. „The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, claims the new map illegally uses race as a factor to favor Hispanic voters and violates the Constitution’s equal protection and voting rights guarantees.“

That’s a wild claim even coming from a Republican.

    17. “Newsom’s office responded in a social media post, saying the state had not yet reviewed the lawsuit but was confident it would fail. “Good luck, losers,” the post read.”

      oop

But it was the will of the people. Funny how the GOP stays happy when things go their way. When it doesn’t, they cry until it does.

    19. Too bad it was voted on by the citizens of California so I’m pretty sure that’s the will of the people you’re trying to sue.

    20. Literally no way this can go through without tanking the Republican redistricting efforts. Didn’t Texas pretty much admit they were going to attack majority minority districts?

    21. Too fucking bad, Republicans. Don’t hate the player, hate the game, which you created.

    22. Repugnicans can’t win fairly and hate when their own tricks are used against them.

    23. Anxious-Dig-5736 on

According to Republican magas, they are only allowed to gerrymander elections.

Trump ordered his DOJ to sue.

This is not a serious party. Not only is his claim bullshit but you can’t in good faith make this argument while you currently have a case in front of the supreme court where your party is asking them to allow gerrymandering using race as a factor

    26. HeyyyyAbbott on

Texas and Cali went about this process in vastly different manners. I wonder if there is a path in which the Texas map gets slapped down and California’s is allowed to stand.

    27. wolf_at_the_door1 on

So on one hand you have red states just going straight to gerrymandering without having a vote from its populace. On the other you have blue states passing the props to be voted on and then they’re voted on unanimously and they still want to bitch and moan. It’s a joke that republicans can’t recognize this obvious double standard.

    28. California Republicans are, with a straight face, arguing this violates the Voting Rights Act…that they want to completely overturn anyway.

    29. randompersonwhowho on

I’m calling it now. The Supreme Court is going to rule prop 50 is unconstitutional while Texas redistrict is fine. End of democracy
