As a Saudi I would say this is the first religious map of Saudi I ever see to be somehow accurate the other ones are garbage. It even depicts the Shia minority in Medina province which most maps either ignore or over exaggerate.

If you could have also shown the madhab differences between Sunnis you could have seen some ethnic differences. For example Kurds in Turkey are exclusively Shafi, meanwhile Turks are mostly Hanafi.
This can also be seen in FGM rates. Shafii schools makes it mandatory for woman to get FGM and it’s endemic in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The shrinking of the ‚christian‘, ‚druze‘, and ‚jew‘ areas is quite appalling. The several ciil wars in the Middle East all reduced the number of non-Muslim in all countries affected.

I’m curious about the sources for the information showing part of all of Iran’s Khuzestan province, just to the east of southern Iraq, as predominantly Sunni. The other maps and numbers I’ve seen show Khuzestan as predominantly Shia.
