*Merz has invited Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to discuss coordinated repatriations*
More than a million Syrians have returned home since the fall of Assad. The EU has pledged to help rebuild the country.

So surely that means Germany will stop Israel bombing and occupying Syrian territory now… right?

This demand is entirely in line with the spirit of asylum law, which is intended to provide temporary protection and not a system for permanent immigration.

I have aome Syrian friends who have escaped the Assad regime, from what they told me the new regime isn’t much better and in some cases it’s even worse. They don’t plan to go back any time soon.

Wait, didn’t Israel attack the Syrian army a couple of months ago because they were committing a genocide? But I’m sure the former Al-Qaeda member has given him asurances it won’t happen again…

I hope european comission will take actions here. Poland was sanctioned for such statements and actions, in this case it will be similar right? because there are no double standards, right?

Syria is going to need an influx of skilled labor and especially the doctors to help with rebuilding their nation. Unfortunately, Syria is not going to be safe unless Merz does the thing him and his coalition find most distasteful: Take a hard stance against Israel.
As long as Israel keep bombing, invading, kidnapping, and stealing territory, Syria can’t be declared safe.
Merz wouldn’t speak against Israel when it was morally right to do so, would he do it when it directly impacts Germany?

Should do the same for Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya.

Merz is famous for dropping big statements bevor the details are set in stone. A couple of weeks ago he also said that Mercuso was a done deal.
So take his words with a grain of salt.

This statement came after his Minister of Foreign Affairs (rightfully) assessed that Syria is not safe enough to return too yet. Merz using the same rascist dogwhistles as the AfD will be his downfall.

After *11 years*, a law-abiding person that has a job and a normal life in Europe, is it really fair to tell them to go back to fricking Syria?

There is a direct correlation between the arrival of millions of Muslim „refugees“ in the past 10 years in Europe, and the spike in the number of people voting for far-right parties, in Europe. Anyone who denies this cause-and-effect is a fool.
Merz is right. If we want to avoid more Euro governments falling into the hands of the anti-EU far right, we need to act dramatically now, and deport all of those who have no good reason to be here beginning with rapists and other criminals.
Refugees must return home when the civil wars they fled are over. It’s not racist, it’s not xenophobic. It’s the law.

It would surprise me if those Syrians who learned the language and integrated (and there are plenty) will be asked to return. For those who didn’t integrate, I think it would make sense to facilitate a return as Europe fulfilled its asylum duties.

Well Syria isn’t exactly safe and many are eligible for citizenship now

Of course a right winger would think like this.
Give Syria at least 2 years before discussing this. Like, Syria hasn’t even had sanctions lifted on it and is still experiencing tenuous civil conflict with flare ups happening regularly. He should wait until at least until the country is actually stabilized and safe before doing deportations.
Syria is not stable. It’s still at high risk of war and is at risk of an economic collapse. Just tell the truth and stop beating around the Volkswagen, Germans don’t want the new Muslim population they’ve received in recent years because a large portion haven’t adopted European/ liberal values.
I doubt many, if any, would go back voluntarily. Most of the asylum seekers from Syria came from Turkiye and I also doubt Turkiye would willing accept them when they have more than enough refugees. This is Angela Merkel and company fault for allowing mass refugees to come in without vetting them first, to see if they were ideologically compatible with Western society. I remember people were being called racist and even some being placed on house arrest for being against the large numbers immigrants coming in as refugees.

About 200.000 Syrians have become German citizens in the last years. It’s not an especially hard process for anyone who made an effort in the last 10 years. Obviously children that grew up here and their parents should be allowed to stay too, regardless of citizenship. Also give a generous deadline for anyone on a clear path to citizenship within maybe a year or so, but for anybody else I don’t really see a justification for a continued stay.

The ones who have at least B2 language proficiency by now, no serious criminal record and work should be allowed to stay, it would be stupid to send productive people away. The rest should return home though.

The UN [seem to have a different opinion](https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/10/1166226) of the current situation in Syria.
It’s unfair if they don’t.
