    1. I despise him so much, ugh. Anyway, c/p follows:

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said he would „impose a 100 percent tariff“ on New Yorkers moving to Texas.

“After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC,” the Republican wrote on X on Monday night.
Abbott’s post came on the eve of New York City’s mayoral election, in which democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is the frontrunner.

Tariffs are taxes on goods, not people, and state governors are not permitted to levy taxes on imports from other states, let alone people. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has recognized that the constitutional right to travel includes the right to enter and leave another state freely and to become a permanent resident of another state.

But Abbott’s comment appears to tap into concerns that a wave of New Yorkers who don’t support Mamdani could flee to Texas if he is elected the mayor of the nation’s largest city.

Mamdani triumphed over former New York Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary in June. He faces Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani has promised to raise taxes on the richest New Yorkers and use the money to make city buses free and provide free, universal child care. He has also promised to freeze rent for people living in about 1 million rent-regulated apartments.

President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and suggested federal funding cuts to the city if he is elected.

Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor if elected.

100% tariffs on rich Republicans moving to Texas? Oh, no, don’t do it. Don’t I say! Don’t!

Two things – first, he can’t do that.

Second – isn’t he threatening New York Republicans? Who else wants to move to Texas?

Imagine for a moment how much better the country would be if we gave Tx back to Mexico.

Yeah, tax the shit out of the two rich conservatives moving from manhattan to fucking dallas. The Texas stock exchange up yet?

I was hoping the article would clear up what a „100% tariff on New Yorkers“ means.

Evidently, Republicans just do not understand what a „tariff“ is and like throwing the word around.

Abbott is not going to stand for all those hypothetical NYers going to Texes.

They will never push him around.

These statements don’t even make sense, how tf do you put a tariff on people? All he’s doing is trying to get MAGAt support by using the words „tariff“ and „New York“ together, he knows the Trumpets are too damn stupid to realize what he’s saying isn’t even possible.

      That’s not anything.

That isn’t what a tariff is, how a tariff is used, or who can levy a tariff. You can’t tariff a person or an action.

This just goes to show how stupid they think their voters are.

    10. Since the only people moving out because of the election results would be rabidly racist republicans, you would think Abbot would welcome them. After all, he bent over for Elon.

      Huh?

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

Wouldn’t he welcome people moving from NY, if they’re leaving because Mamdani wins? They would be his people.

Also… he legally can’t do what he said.

And… What would he be putting a tarriff on?

None of this makes any sense.

Why does the gop always sound like internet trolls? This is so 14 year old meme bro territory. What an embarrassment.

    13. It’s obviously a joke, but it may say something about how he must be concerned that Texas could turn blue with the right influx in the right areas. That may not affect things statewide at the county levels much, but they could lose a senator (or possibly both) and it would put the electoral votes for president also in jeopardy. And, losing his seat may be his biggest fear.

All these billionaires threatening to leave the city like that’s going to discourage people from voting for Mamdani… like are they dumb?

He mobilized the vote by highlighting affordability… no one cares if the billionaires leave, they weren’t paying their fair share anyway

    15. Alive_kiwi_7001 on

So, he’d impose a bigger tax on these people who are supposedly going to be leaving NYC because of…Mamdani’s taxes? Great logic, Greg. This is why the big brains hang out in the GOP.

    16. southernNJ-123 on

Even the poorest republicans from NY wouldn’t move to tExAs. They go to Florida.

    17. viewerfromthemiddle on

This is how a leader sounds when he sneers at the idiocy of his own base.

Abbott knows what a tariff is, but he thinks so little of his supporters that he throws out nonsense like this. Is he right?

    18. ok, ummm, what does that mean though? Is the state of Texas going to impound all the property of people moving there from New York? sounds like COMMUNISM……Also….. i was told all the rich people were going to flee to wonderful republican states to escape Zohran…this seems….counterproductive

    19. These fucking morons just use words without having any idea what they mean. This is what happens when you have one of richest but stupidest countries in the world.

    20. SillyGoatGruff on

What a stupid thing to say. There is „saying inflammatory buzzwords to role people up“ and then there is „make people question if your brain works right“

    21. iveseensomethings82 on

So he is acknowledging that a tariff is basically a tax on citizens.

    22. 100% tariff on…what?

And who would this punish? Certainly not New Yorkers who are happy with their votes.
