Unless he plans to use his own body without a spacesuit, this is a terrible idea.

It’s amazing that people will consider trying to block out the Sun rather than just using solar power instead of fossil fuels. Just seems like the hard way.

Probably about 11 or 12 years ago I took a political science class on the political and ethical concerns of science. This was actually a topic we covered. It’s been floated for a long time that blocking the sun (typically by putting some type of aerosolized chemical in the atmosphere) it would reduce global temperatures. The concern however is that how do you get global buy in on that? You’d literally have to get everyone on board because doing it unilaterally would result in severe consequences. And on top of that, how do you demonstrate that this would be an effective solution? And how do you demonstrate that the solution is also effective long term? Why is it that this is a better solution than reducing greenhouse gas emissions? You’re still running into the problem of global emissions going up, and that’s got a whole host of other issues outside of global temperatures.

Very interesting question – I don’t think we’ll ever see this happen, no matter what Musk thinks. The global attitude toward this idea remains highly skeptical with the exception a portion of the scientific community who sees it as doable, but not necessarily a great idea for ethical reasons.

This guy can’t even get his starship to the moon, I don’t think we have to worry about this.
