Honestly this may be a bigger blunder than Ford wants to really admit. Foreign affairs is the jurisdiction of the federal government, not the provinces. This could have been avoided if he stayed in his lane.
Now, do I think Trump was going to fuck us anyways? Yeah – absolutely. He’d find another excuse.
Ford doesn’t care. He’s always been the type of person to act and think later (pretty much like most populist politicians).
Sadly, I don’t expect Poilievre will do the honorable thing and retract [his recent statement](https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/poilievre-says-carney-approved-ontarios-anti-tariff-ad-that-trump-said-ended-trade-talks):

So, here is my take – because with trump it’s never about what it’s about- Carney announced there would be deal announcement last week – trump caught wind of that because his people would have been working on and said no – and the best way to side step it was the ad – other wise they look foolish- the US negotiating team also said a deal
Was in the works – this is nothing more than window dressing and an excuse.
There is no and never will be a deal because trump
Wants a 51st state and that is that.
If I were PM, I’d let Ford play bad cop just to let Trump that we fuk him up bad, so better negotiate with us nicely. Trump is weakening, as his economy is weakening. Delaying trade negotiations longer is to our advantage, as his popularity declines. I wouldn’t worry too much by pissing Trump off. He and Putin are on the same downward trajectory going into 2026. They may not even be around by 2027 at this pace.
I’m guessing it was too late to get a refund on the ad buy and Ford wasn’t prepared to throw away millions.
The whole thing has been a mess.
Good on you, Ford. Carney apologizing to Trump over an innocent ad weakens our position in the negotiations. We can’t react every time Trump throws a temper tantrum. Ford (and Kinew and Eby) have the right idea with Trump. Carney needs to stop prostrating himself and Canada to Trump.
