It remains impossible to see how a government without one of FF or FG can be formed.
Obviously things can change quickly (we saw that with the Presidential campaign and the SF slump pre 2024) but I think the Connolly election will long term not help SF. I believe they have fundamental issues at the top and are a very tired looking party. That election has given them a false sense of progress. A new direction and reshuffling is desperately needed.
Whilst there notionally is 42% for the 5 “Left Wing” parties, the fragmented vote and individual demands of each party won’t help.
The signs and initial policy direction of FG and FF are of a shift to the right. They’ll both be eying Aontú and Independent Ireland’s vote share here.
Call me in 4 years will ya. These opinion polls do one thing mid term – FF and FG slide up and down a bit, SF go up, and then when it comes time for an election people move from “I hate FFG” to “ehh, I dislike the alternative more”
I hate that the only alternative to the government is SF for so many, they’re an awful party. A right wing party masquerading as a left wing party. Every shinner I know is a racist pos. Every single one!
With the election over, it’s back to the same old opinion polls for our Sunday newspapers
One would imagine that FF/FG would have realized they were in the last chance saloon when they won last November. The inertia on housing, not just on building but on compulsory purchase of viable empty properties,is inexplicable. There’s a viable left coalition in those poll numbers.
Social Dems on 9%, that’s a jump. They’re only 10 years old and building support and members. They get more seats with each GE so I think as the FF and FG voters age out that’s where Middle Ireland will migrate to if the Social Dems can field more candidates.
We’re basically decades behind the curve compared to the maturity of Social Democratic parties support base in countries like Nordics and Germany and what they achieved post war in government so I’m hoping that’s the path Ireland will take too.
They’re the only real alternative for those who won’t vote SF but disillusioned with FFG and want a centrist, socially progressive party.
Ok, so will sinn Fein and the SDs actually capitalise on this, or will they do what happened last time they started looking popular.
We need to see a unified left take on FF+FG, nothing will ever change if the opposition is all splintered.
