I have to admit this has brought something home to me as someone who lives in the West with our liberal freedoms.

It has been irritating me immensely when protest groups make a nuisance of themselves by blocking traffic and delaying my commute or hindering my business because they care so much about their pet passions.

However, now I’m seeing how important it is for people in the West to be allowed to have their freedoms to protest, however trivial or irrelevant it seems to me, because, far more than my personal inconvenience, we are witnessing a manifest strangulation of freedom of expression globally.

If we allow the shutting down of protests or free speech today just because we find the issue trivial or a nuisance, tomorrow we may end up in a society like Iran.

That nation was, at one time, a thoroughly free, liberal, and prosperous country, similar to what we experience here now.
