Die NHS-Blut- und Transplantationsdienste haben nach dem Vorfall gestern Abend in Huntingdon einen Aufruf an Blutspender veröffentlicht:
"Dank Spendern aus dem ganzen Land konnten wir 40 Einheiten Blut, darunter 20 Einheiten O-negativ – der in Notfällen verwendeten Blutgruppe – an das Krankenhaus liefern, in dem Verletzte behandelt werden. Wir danken allen Kollegen, die an diesem Wochenende gearbeitet haben und die so schnell reagieren konnten. Die Bestände an O-negativem, B-negativem und RO-Blut gehen derzeit zur Neige. Wir brauchen dringend mehr Spender mit diesen Blutgruppen, die wir für die kommenden Tage und Wochen reservieren können. Wenn Sie Ihre Blutgruppe noch nicht kennen, spenden Sie Blut und finden Sie es heraus."
Wenn Sie spenden können, insbesondere wenn Sie O- oder B-Blut haben, sollten Sie einen Termin vereinbaren, da die Nachfrage im Winter immer steigt. Blut ist von entscheidender Bedeutung, nicht nur bei seltenen schweren Zwischenfällen wie diesem, sondern auch bei Krebspatienten, der Neugeborenen- und Entbindungspflege und vielen anderen Erkrankungen. NHSBT ist auch super freundlich und man bekommt am Ende der Spende einen Keks und eine Tasse Kaffee – sowie das warme Gefühl, etwas Altruistisches getan zu haben!

We get Tunnocks Tea Cakes as part of our after donation snacks.
I work as a biomedical scientist in a transfusion lab and we really do need those units, especially B- as that is a less common blood type. It makes a big difference to get group-specific units and is generally safer for patients who need transfusions. I would also implore people from BAME backgrounds to donate because they are much less likely to donate but are useful for BAME recipients due to being more likely to have a suitable antigen profile.
It feels like it is much harder to give blood now. I have tried a few times to find very restrictive appointments available and rarely see mobile blood donation units. I remember in the 80s my parents often gave blood and it appeared quite easy to find somewhere to do so.
If they made it easier I would happily take part.

I donate every 3 months and takes an hour or so each time.
Super easy and i get a custard cream.
Everyone should try and do so if they can, it’s so easy.
I donate blood and would urge anyone who can to give it a go.
It is, at least in my area, getting harder and harder to get an appointment to do so. I get lots of emails and text saying how much they need my blood type, but I often have to book appointments weeks if not months in advance, when I arrive for my appointment they are always running late (tricky when trying to fit in around work) and my last two appointments have been cancelled last minute with no explanation. If more appointments were available and the service more reliable I’d donate more often.
Work in London. What a rigmarole it is these days to give blood. They need to bring back the mobile units or at the very least make it easier with more local availability
I checked the donor criteria and it says you can’t give blood if you’ve had anal sex in the past 3 months. I thought the restrictions on gay men giving blood were removed years ago but apparently not.
I tried a couple of times this year and they cancelled both times so I just kinda gave up.
I’d love to donate but can’t due to health issues — it at least makes me feel better to know so many people volunteer in these situations.

Yeah i would love to. Except its once in a blue moon in my area. It annoys me as I work in a hospital and wanted to get a blood donation site going but couldnt get it to happen. There are so so many people ready and willing but the logistics are terrible.
In the rough area and would love to but failed the last 2 times (hard to find my veins and flow low). Dad gives when he can although failed last time due to the test showing him as low iron. But would recommend people do it, if it works its fairly quick and no obvious side effects.
I donated last month, but I am O+, so useless for this request! I also have to wait a certain amount of time to donate again.
Is there any chance they might take my blood? I’ve literally begged before, I meet all the criteria but am generally slightly anaemic by their measures.
I’d love to donate, but my nearest donation centre has no appointments until 25th February. And the next nearest, none until March! There are some sooner ones, but I’d have to drive to the next city over. They’re all weekdays as well, which is logistically not possible for me at the moment with work and small kids
JHC. People are dying and in need of blood to save their lives and the reddit comments are „It’s too inconvenient“.
I’m sure that’ll be your attitude when you’re injured and dying.
Also, it’s not. I give regularly and so does my wife. It’s a minor time inconvenience and getting an appointment really isn’t hard. Just try.
I’ve signed up to be a blood donor, as I’d be happy to give blood as I have type O. Sadly there are no points near me to do it
They shouldn’t have closed so many apherisis units then they wouldn’t be using blood to make it.
📢 As a blood donor of 55 pints and counting, I just want to say this; we need more people to come forward to donate blood on the regular, every 3 or 4 months. If you can, please do so ❤️
I acknowledge peoples empathy to suddenly donate when we hear of an incident that gets major media coverage, but *blood is required 24/7 in our hospitals*…not just for major emergencies, but for women who give birth, cancer patients, those undergoing surgery etc…blood doesn’t just appear out of a tap – it comes only from people who are willing to give up an hour of their time to donate a pint, to better improve someone elses life.
Without regular donors, people die.
Blood and its components do not have a long shelf life, and so another reason we need regular blood donors to come forward.
I know I will get flamed, I’m aware that people struggle to get appointments or get cancelled (this seems to be more an NHSBT thing), but I give with the SNBTS and they have been brilliant with their system to donate blood, as well as blood products.
I gave blood in August (O+) had them call me up a couple of weeks later asking if I’d be willing to switch to plasma donation – which is a bit out of the way for me as there are limited places in the UK to go for it. But I said I’d do it.
Issue is, not everyone is as willing as I am to take a big chunk of time and money to go out of their way to donate like that – they should try and make it more accessible to people if they want to get more donors.
I’m O negative and appointments to give are often 4 weeks in advance. So frustrating
Echoing all of the whining about it being hard to get an appointment and adding that it’s harder to even get approved now.
No tattoos or piercings in the last 6 months, only one new sexual partner in the same period, even certain sex acts (👀) rule you out.
I know it was probably done to allow them to relax the rules again msm donating but feels like if you’re single and/or cool then they don’t want to see you.
