From my armchair general perspective, this Move is heavily publicized for a reason, the main objective now seems to enable remaining Troops to withdraw from the City, and they are hoping to delay the Russians.
Pokrovsk is lost, the Russians focused an insane amount of personell and firepower onto it in recent months, its a miracle they have been holding for so long. I really hope the Ukrainians are not repeating the Mistakes of Bakhmut here, which is wasting valuable manpower in urban fighting.
Just withdraw to the next Line, and make the Russians attack again in more favourable territory. This has become a war of attrition and Ukraine needs to maximize losses while preserving their own strength, which you can only do by trading territory for time.
This is a pretty crucial place for Russia. And not something that should just be given up and thought about getting back later. It’s also been under fire so long that it’s a huge mess to get all the troops out. It’s kind of one of those situations where the only good defense is offense. And it’s worked well for most of the other times Russia has tried things like this recently. So I’ll hold out optimism for a few days to see what really happens.
